One of the number 1 New Year Resolutions, next to losing weight, is getting fit.  Walking is great way to do this. Lisa VonBargen, my friend in Estes Park, has a great post today about a wonderful place to take a walk in Colorado.

Yesterday, one of my friends sent me an email about the Importance of Walking, filled with excellent information about the subject.  I thought I'd pass along my favorites to you from the email:

I don't know why this post has an X but I love it. Actually I am in complete agreement with #4. I have to run early so when my body wants to protest, it's too late we are already a 1.2 mile down the trail! ;-)

O.K., that settles it.  I am not walking.  I knew it was bad for you.  And after my 1.5 mile walk I think I am done for the year.

Hi Mary,

Great post! Really some funny chuckles for today. I have a 3 mile route I walk 3-4 times a week and I always feel so much better when I'm done! Now I will have to reevaluate!!

I got these sneakers for Christmas that are supposed to make you more physically fit when you walk because they have a concave sole. But, maybe I do not want to live that long?

LOL...Thanks for sharing, Now I understand why I gain a few extra pounds every year; All that info in my head and not the fact that I don't excercise enough.

Hi Russell, I gave myself the X since it was only an email..and good for you to run early in the morning -- I take a brisk walk to the coffee pot and back to my chair :-)  LOL!

Hi Zane,  It's nice to see you again, it's been awhile.  I'm glad you got a smile.

Hi Lou, I thought they were funny - glad you agree :-)

HAHA Craig -- I think you are probably right - it must be bad for you :-)

LOL Ruth!  Yes, if someone says exercise they should have their mouth washed out with chocolate!

Hi Ann, Walking on snow or ice is definitely treacherous -- be careful out there :-)

Jane you are cracking me up - I think it's highly overrated, unless it's a beautiful summer day.

Hi Dorie, as long as you can still find your way back home you are probably OK for now! LOL!!

Hi Melissa,  a concave sole?? I fear your feet will give out long before the rest of you :-)

Amy, it is all the information, I'm positive !  LOL!

Mary -  Sage wisdom is just not sage ... it's practical. I rarely give long responses ... but I digress this time

In Charlotte, NC we have what are called Greenways. No I'm not a Greenie, but these are a system of wide pathways through the various parts of Mecklenburg County (to be eventually connected) that have 6 to 8 miles stretches of wide thoroughfares capable of handlining bicycles, runners and walkers off the city streets, away from cars , and meandering through natural areas of Charlotte proper and the county wide. To date ther is 50 + miles .They are continuing to be connected....a little bit at a time

I say this as my wife enrolled in a program last year called the couch to 5K in 90 days. NO we did not do a 5K.

But your post  caught my attention and engaged my spirit. We embrace this Greenway system here in Charlotte and, when the weather permits walk a fast paced walk every day for 3.5 miles. AWESOME on the benefits. Cheers to your post. We are hooked on our routine. We have embraced Quality of life and think your message needs to to pushed and shared. A 3 mile walk each day will make your life a healthier prospect.

I am inspired by your Grandpa 'cause that's my solution too.

Wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year from us humble Realtors that walk here in Charlotte.

Claude & Jane Cross

Happy New Year

Hi Mary-I love to walk. It is truly one of the best exercises besides swimming especially when you have a tired old body like mine. LOL Love the blog. Pretty funny my friend. Happy New Year. <SMILE>

Hi Claude, The Greenways system sounds like a wonderful system and similar to the trails they have created in Fort Collins (the closest City to us).  The trail systems are a blessing and a great amenity!  I hope you do not end up like Grandpa, I read that one as though he were lost !! :-)

Hi Sharon, Glad you thought it was funny.  I like to walk too, but don't get out and do it as often in winter.  Happy New Year to you, Sharon!

Donald has walked both of them the past two days.  Making up for that hand surgery  mommie got all the walkings for a week... and my neighbors just laugh... and say the dogs walk me.  I do okay with the 95 pound lab, but Glen at 125 now well I just try to hold on until he is ready to go home, and sometimes that means jogging.

I agree Al & Peggy!  Get going early before you realize what you're doing! LOL!  Have fun and I hope you have a very Happy New Year!

Tammy, It really does does like the dogs walk you!  Glen sounds like he is too big and too strong -- maybe get a skateboard and just let him pull you LOL!!

Ann, I think you are right...or snowshoes or skiis would work too! LOL

Stacey-Ann - If I make a resolution I find I don't do it either -- I don't know why.  Now, I no longer make resolutions. :-) Happy New Year Stacey-Ann!

Hi Lisa Mary Douglas, I was just walking over in LOST CREEK CANYON and I discovered some great OCEAN FRONT PROPERTY that I could sell you very cheap since you are a Realtor®.  I understand that you buy and sell RURAL properties all the time.  Let me know if I can help you.  Your blog does not allow anonymous comments so this individual was kind enough to get me on your site.  Mr. Haney

Mary...Walking is close to my heart...My husband, who has had 4 neck surgeries and chronic neuropathic pain, has steadily walked over the past four years, lost almost 60 lbs and has kept it off...It's his spiritual worship to God...thanks for the blog...

Hi Mary...my good friend in Red Feather Lakes...hope you find your grandpa soon, it's COLD out there! One of the things i miss most about not having a dog anymore is our three mile hikes through the forest every day, no matter what the weather. Not that I'm lazy about it, it's just those bobcat, bear, mountain lion scary tracks in the snow, you know?  Have a wonderful 2010!

Hey Mary,

Snow shoes are something I have never tried.  Skiing was fun when I was 16 and indestructible...  Ice in a cold drink sounds good....

I think I saw your grandpa headed up Paradox road towards Naturita.

Hi Mr. Haney, you obviously are lost in Lost Creek Canyon..Indiana is much further east.  Bruce Walter is waiting for you, as I understand that he is wanting to purchase some rural property.  I told him I would find one of the best people to help him -- so keep walking, and tell Bruce "Hello" when you see him!  LOL!

Hi Lisa, I have an aversion to mountain lion tracks in the snow!  I have been looking, but so far have only seen deer and rabbit!  Have a very Happy New Year Lisa, I hope you will get a new walking companion in 2010!

Hi Ann, I'm not certain about snow shoes on ice, come to think about it -- but I would vote for the ice in a drink. :-)

Hi Nick, Apparently there are several reasons to reconsider walking! LOL  I hope granpa is doing well, it sounds like a good place to walk? :-)

Hi Cherise, I'm sorry, Mr. Haney threw me off, and I skipped commenting to you.  I am glad that your husband does so well with his walking - it is always a treat to get out and see the beauty in the world that surrounds us. I like the way you put it - "his spiritual worship to God"  Thanks Cherise!

good morning, Mary! I just had to stop back by and visit this post one more time. You see, we are having our annual New Years resolution discussions, and I want to remember why I don't have to add this one to my list! Matter of fact, I'm going to reblog it so I can remind myself throughout the year!

I take my dogs to the dog park 3-4 times a week. I  used to sit in a chair while they ran but just recently I started standing and kicking a soccer ball for one of my dogs.  I have only been doing this for a couple of weeks and I have noticed a difference in my physique, plus I get some frustration and energy out and I sleep better!

I believe your message here is very true!  We all need some cardio!

Hi Ann, I didn't see that movie- perhaps I will catch it this year -- however, I would much rather dance in winter than walk :-)  Just like Lady GaGa  LOL!

Hi Renee - I like that cardio walking around showing vacant lots - I agree, it's good for us!
