Ahh, the Monsoon Is Here

In many parts of the world, "monsoon" means disaster. In Flagstaff, it means heavenly weather.

After the long-dry, and hot, Spring, somewhere around the 4th of July, the big thunderheads begin to form and most afternoons we have heavy rain showers. It started yesterday and today we're in full monsoon season. After the showers, the weather clears in time for evening hikes and barbecues. There are cool, light breezes. Morning will bring a clear sky. By mid-morning, we'll see light-fluffy clouds. Then the thunderheads will come in. The season continues until around Labor Day. High temperatures will be in the 80s, lows in the 60s, or even 50s.

What a beautiful place to live!

I think I'll come to "Flag" for a couple of weeks...it sounds delightful...I'm in LV and the temps are hovering at the the 117 mark the last couple of days, it's supposed to COOL down tomorrow.......to 112! HA. We had rain clouds and wind this afternoon, I thought maybe we'd get lucky and get some rain, but didn't happen. A few days in Flag sound awesome!

The monsoons are just "thinking" about beginning here in Gold Canyon. The past 2 days we have almost had rain.

Man, I am jealous. It is hot here.

What you describe, is what I remember growing up in Tucson, except, the high temp was in the 90's, but a monsoon could swoop in and bring the temp down to the 70's in no time. Unheard of here.

The title of your post reminded me of India. They have Monsoons right now. Good post.

When I first started spending time in Northern Arizona everybody was freeking me out with the "monsoons are coming" ....boooo! Turns out they've got nothing on SW Florida weather. It's rain and weather.

The monsoons are fabulous, and anyone that lives on the east coast that's never been to Arizona really doesn't know. We lived in Tucson for 6 years from 1981 - 1987. It was awesome. On going to work, you had to schedule your return route if the dry gulches were full and over-running. You weren't supposed to drive through them. One year (I still have the newspaper in my cedar chest), the skies opened up and what was called Pantano Wash (wide as could be and totally dry) became a raging river! I drove down as close as I dared to the edge and took photos. Several mobile homes in the areas actually fell into the Wash. The neatiest part about the afternoon storms was somewhere around 12:00pm there would be a tiny cloud in the sky. The back of our house faced Nogales, so I guess that's south; you could just sit on the patio and watch the clouds build; by late afternoon it was just starting to rain, buckets of water, and then it was over just as quick. The lightening was intense; so intense that one day it hit our backyard (dirt and decorative rock) and fried our garage opener, microwave and security system. It's just awesome! Thanks for reminding me of our time in Tucson!
