Eschew Obfuscation, Real-Espeak

A friend of mine's favorite bumper sticker says, Eschew Obfuscation.  Eschew; avoid, shun, stay away from.  Obfuscation: to make something obscure, confused or unclear.  So avoid confusion.  Why didn't I just say so?  It sounds so much cooler to use big words and sound smart.

Do we get caught up in jargon?  (Jargon: Terminology, slang, lingo common to a specific practice or profession)  I'll get the GFE and TIL out for your FSBO.  How's your REO, did you resolve your BLA?  Are your Relo's in town?  I reached out to my SOI and got 2 new names for my DB.  My MLS requires 30 hours CE, and the NAR offers some online.  Have you seen the DTI when PMI has been added to the PITI, especially on the back end?  What are the LTV and CLTV and the APR on the ARM.  My site has great SEO since I've paid attention to GoogleJuice as taught at AR.

What????  How many of these do you know?  If it's less than 100% and we are in the profession, what chance does a first time buyer have to understand us?  One of the benefits of working with first time buyers is they know little to none of our Real-Espeak.  We are forced to explain escrow and title insurance, earnest money, the entire sale and the loan process to them or we get those quizzical looks.  Even experienced buyers and sellers who haven't been active for a while may not understand what we are saying.

So, how are we doing when we speak to the public?  Do we require a translator to communicate? Do you pass out Real-Espeak glossaries to your clients, or do you speak so as to be understood?  What are your favorite often misunderstood words or acronyms?

Hi Dan~ We have to think about this no matter what our profession is! Having been in the medical profession as a RN,  I had to be careful to avoid using terms our patients may not understand.

Hi Vickie,

Your right, all professions have their own internal language.  Medicine is especially good at this, sometimes you want people to understand, and sometimes you don't.  Happy New Year.

One call-I've done it all! Sales/Title/Escrow

Our industry is so full of jargon, I think it's hilarious! But, it's true-if you're from outside of the industry, you almost need a glossary to know what we're talking about. Proof in point, my husband joined me on a dinner with some Realtor clients of mine. My hubby is a sports tv cameraman, and truly doesn't know a thing about title/real estate/lending business other than the basics that he's absorbed in my 17 years. Anyhow, at dinner, my two clients and I lapsed into the comfort zone and chatted away about this and that and what we felt were important or funny stories from our business. When we got home, my hubby sighed and started dancing around saying goofy stuff about how he didn't understand a doggone word we were saying and started throwing out all these terms that did NOT make sense-but he thought they did. Proof in point-if he didn't understand what the heck we were talking about and he's been hearing me yammer on for 17 years-then you KNOW "Joe and Jane Consumer" don't!

Some people AKA agents just can't speak without jargon...it's their way of saying they know more than the consumer/client.

Dan: These are all good points. Personally, I try and educate my clients about how our business works and what the terminology means. I don't feel there should be any secrets. Again, thanks for the post. Eschewing obfuscation works. Plus, I learned a couple new words today! Take care.
