Is Real Estate on your Client's Bucket List? You Bet It Is

I was thinking about this topic last week when I was finishing up my goal sheet for 2010.  I personally A home is a hopeful drop in the buckethave two real estate purchases I am working toward that effect my immediate goals for 2010.  One is to purchase a single family residence in Lake Geneva within the next 3 years.  The second is to work toward purchasing my dream real estate property, a log cabin, within the next 10-15 years, close to the time that I plan to put my business up for sale.

Am I alone in creating real estate goals? Absolutely not.  Despite any current economical woes time marches on.  For any old dreams that may have died with the struggles of the economy new ones will arise.  It is a human desire to have a home.  I would call this desire an instinctual need that predates to humankind's first footsteps across the earth.  While shelter is a basic need, a home is what everyone desires.

  • A place where you can mark the kitchen wall with your children's height.
  • A place where you can retire with ease and comfort.
  • A place where you can put your first mark of adulthood after college pays off and you land that real job you've been working toward.
  • A place where friends and family can come and hang.
  • A place where you can lay our head after a busy workday.
  • A place where you can grow and watch things grow.

It's true that everyone wants this place called home.

So as you toil through your market this year remember that regardless of where some of your clients are at today....it will not be the same tomorrow and tomorrow can change in a day or a year.

Keep in touch and keep your marketing steady and valuable.  Keep giving and offering help. Keep in mind that the desire to have a home will never change.

Regardless of any cycle we are in, real estate will be on your client's bucket list so make sure you are top of mind to help your clients when they plan to fulfill their dreams.  It could be sooner than you think.

I agree that the need and desire to buy a home will always be a primary goal for many families.  The average family will purchase 7 homes in their lifetime.  I am living in my fifth home.  I do believe that I have at least 2 more moves ahead of me.  That is a lot of real estate to be bought and sold.

Rebecca, I remember my first moves thinking that this was the house I would be in forever.  I quickly found that the Lord had other plans.  It is funny I finally said okay I give put me where you want me.  We have now been in the same house for 14 years.  I did learn through that experience that you just don't know when those moves are going to happen.

Hi Rebecca,

Hope you are having a happy holiday season.  How right you are!  It may not be in the immediate future, but most people have some type of real estate plan for the future.

It's on their list because it's about home.  For most people it has nothing to do with return on investment or any other financial equation.  It's all about having a home of your own.  Always has been, always will be.

A good message for buyers, sellers and folks in the business.  If we hang in there and provide the consumer with the info they need to make informed decisions we'll be fine.

Homes are a very desireable refuge for many of us.

The American Dream as it is called for a reason, we are fortunate to have a larger percentage of home ownership than anywhere in the world.  It is a dream that we Realtors facilitate.  How lucky we are to live in this country and be in this noble profession.  We are blessed.

Rebecca - Thanks for sharing your goals. It made me realized that deep down, I do have my very own real estate dream too.

My business profits fund my personal residence entirely and I do hope that it will be soon that I will be done with my mortgage. Then, I will be debt-free forever more.

I do have dreams to go into a smaller, but a better quality home. But I will have to do it with cash from here on out. But that's my dream that you have made me really think very clearly about. My husband share the same wishes, which is good.

Rebecca - People may not always be in a "buying mode", but are always curious (or concerned, like in recent months) about a value of properties in their neighborhood.  After all, for most, real estate is the biggest purchase they make, and they hope its value goes up. Valid points.

Today we are at the end of a tumultuous decade, and looking forward.  Fox News just told the nation that it was too risky to invest in a volitale real estate market.   However, I can attest that I have found some wonderful opportunities for clients that they could not have found in a normal market.

Good reminder to put all our goals on paper, keep them in front of us every morning so the bucket on our list doesn't spring a leak.  Happy New Year!

5 more rental properties are on my 2010 list. Interesting to me that in the last half of this year investors of mine who were inactive for all of last year are now taking the plunge. No flippers, just good conservative long term purchases. Real estate makes for great Social Security. Oh, and thanks for remembering Kate Bush. She had and still has a cult following.

I was thinking about this for a minute....my first reaction was that everyone wants real estate. Then I thought about my bucket list. My kids are almost out.....I have 4 years left of high school with my youngest. My bucket list is a large motorhome and freedom. I wonder if we spend the first part of our lives aquiring, and the second half divesting? Hmmmm

Yes, real estate fits into my life plan. We took advantage of the softened prices in San Francisco and purchased our future home a couple of years early--tenants are making the mortgage payments until we're ready to make the move. Also in the plan: sell one investment property in 2010. My clients like to know I practice what I preach!

I am not sure that owning a home before you die is a thing people would have on thier list... to me that just does NOT make it into my most meaningful things to accomplish if I am not going to be taking that home into the great beyond with me.....

BUT, having a home to will to your kids MIGHT be something to work towards.....

Nice post......

Your last line said it... be sure to stay "top of mind" with people, because you just never know when things in their life will line up correctly for them to want and need your services.

I think back to a seminar at NAR many years ago - the speaker told about a friend of her Mom's asking her "Are you still in real estate honey?" right after she talked about having listed her house.

You just don't want that to happen!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Funny, I was thinking about this last night after I put the last of the 27 boxes of Christmas decorations away.

I love my home, it is the right size even though there was always a time we could use an extra bedroom or bath for the many kids and adults that have visited or passed through on their way to getting back on their feet.

I never saw myself living in the same place for 15 years and each time I think I'm ready to move on to a smaller place with the concierge lifestyle I've dreamed of.....it seems we have another short term guest to accommodate.

There is still time to complete my bucket list and continue to help our clients with theirs.  I enjoy being a Realtor and experincing what our customers go through.

Thanks for your great thoughts!    Joy

Lottie- Well then you very much understand the value of real estate in your life and are using it well to fit your needs and wants.....goal setting.  Good for you and thanks for sharing that here.

Alexander- I use bucket list kind of as a metaphor...having a home I believe is something everyone wants to do while their living.  If we think of it in terms of goals many goals we set would be ready to mature before we pass away, some goals we set will mature while we are gone, creating a type of legacy if you will.  Your goal you mentioned is one of those.  For me, yes, I would like to own more than one home again while I am living.  Speaking to people and reading people's words I believe this is a common goal.  Has to be while we are living because you are right, we don't take those things with us when we're gone.

First off the "BUCKET LIST" is a great movie.  I honestly hadn't heard of a bucket list  until I watched it.  That being said I'm sure most people have that desire.  I'd like to get my hands on a beach house in the next 10 years.  I need to buy a home home first though.

Okay, first, the video is just cute. Secondly, someone will always be buying real estate in any market. We are trying to stay top of mind so whomever that somebody is, however few it may be, some or most will think of us. We have to keep moving forward because life will whether we like it or not.

BTW, I always loved this song.
