Organize Your Home After The Holidays - Create More Storage Space

Now is the perfect time to organize the storage areas of your home.  Most people are taking down holiday decorations and need storage solutions for the 'extras' acquired during the season.  But why not take it one step further and apply these tips to other areas of your home that need organization?  If you plan to sell your home in the near future, you will want to clean the clutter anyway.

  • If you use an artificial tree, consider leaving the lights and decorations on and storing it completely assembled in a TreeKeeper bag.  The bag comes with plastic hooks that allow you to hang the tree from rafters in your attic or garage.  This leaves floor space open.
  • Adjustable storage cases are perfect for ornament hangers or extra tree lights.  But these cases are good for non-holiday things as well.  If you have a junk drawer (or two or three) then a short storage case that is divided into sections is perfect for organizing the drawer neatly.  You could even use a utensil holder in your junk drawer. One area for pens, one for keys, one for batteries and so forth.
  • Crush proof wreath cases are nice to have for large wreaths.  You simply place the wreath in the box and shut the lid.  There are mounting holes on the back of the plastic cases, so this also can be hung from rafters.
  • Hanging storage systems are perfect for small items that clutter up shelves, drawers or tops of refrigerators.  They can also be used for wrapping paper remnants, bows, tapes and tags leftover from the holidays.
  • Elevated storage systems are made for garages and are wonderful! They hold up to 250lbs worth of items.  The hand crank allows you to bring the shelf down to your level so you can access your storage.  This is perfect for the plastic storage bins.
  • Utilize your closet space! Measure the height of your closet shelf and use stackable storage bins that fit the space.  They come in all shapes and sizes.  Store sweaters, hats, seasonal clothes and other miscellaneous items in the bins.
  • Kitchen organization is easier than it appears.  Increase cupboard space by installing wire shelves.  Attach narrow shelves or organizers to cupboard doors.  Also, leave small appliances that you regularly use on your counters.  Go through the Tupperware and recycle or trash any container that doesn't have a lid, and vice versa.  Throw away any spices you've had for over a year as they lose their flavor.  Invest in a hanging pot rack if you have the space.  Use wire baskets hanging in a corner to keep clean dishcloths, potatoes, or snacks.

There are many ideas for organizing and maximizing space in your home.  Start with one room and work your way through the home (after the holiday decorations are put away of course).  It may take a while, but it will all be worth it in the end.
