Putting away the Christmas items is kinda sad sometimes. This ceramic St. Nicholas that my Mother made me many years ago has been the center of my Christmas decoration thoughts each year. Mother is no longer here so it makes it even more an honored item. She loved making ceramic stuff and putting lots of bling on them. (Except it wasn't called bling then.) This St. Nicholas took her many weeks of firing, decorating and glueing all the little stuff on. She always said I could never appreciate the hours that she had put into any of her art.
The first five years Mike and I were married, Mom didn't really like him since he brought me halfway across the world to Washington state to live. So every year for Christmas she sent Mike weird stuff as a gift. The first 2-3 years Mother sent him one pair NEON green socks. On the fourth year she sent him one pair of orange NEON socks. The fifth year she began what I call her "ceramic" phase so she made something special for Mike. A very large ceramic boob cup. (You can only imagine where you drank out of the boob cup.) The next year for Christmas, Mother sent the matching mate to the boob cup. Mike thought this was quite humorous. Large matching boob cups are not really a household accessory to serve tea to the neighbors with. I think of it as akin to the famous "leg lamp." The next year Mother made him a ceramic naked girl tie holder. (Mike has never worn ties.) The tie holder girl was sitting with her legs stretched out in front of her with a towel draped around her kinda discreetly. I bought him a tie and dutifully hung up the girl in the closet.
I have fond memories of all the mischieveous things Mother did for a laugh. She had a little evil twinkle in her eye. And I miss that.
