This material was used in the construction of approximately 100,000 or more homes in the United States, and many folks believe this has lead to serious health and property damage.

Ltd., which is part of Knauf Gips KG is the primary company named as a producer. Theres other Chinese companies that are suspected of producing defective drywall. Knauf's name comes up the most consistently, they print their name on their products.


Although at this time it known to be life threatening, but exposure to high levels of airborne hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds from contaminated drywall can result in the following physical ailments.

  • sore throat
  • coughing
  • sinus irritation
  • dry or burning eyes
  • headache
  • wheezing
  • respiratory infections

Exposed copper wiring appears dark and corroded.


The home has a strong sulfur smell reminiscent of rotten eggs.


Silver jewelry and silverware can become similarty corroded and discolored after several months of exposure.


The manufacturer's label on the back of the drywall can be used to link it with manufactures that are known to have used contaminated materials. You can go up into your attic, and remove some of the insulation.


Samples of the home's drywall can be sent to a lab to be tested for any dangerous levels of sulfur. This is best way to test it, but its also the most expensive.

Affected Home Owners have been forced to either just suffer bad health and haven their appliances fail, due to wire corrosion or haven to replace the home's drywall entirely, which this procedure that can very well cost the Home Owner tens of thousands of dollars. This contamination further reduces home values in a already down Real Estate environment. There are even some insurance companies that are refusing to pay for folks to replace their home's drywall, and because of that, there are folks that are facing financial ruin. There has been a class action lawsuits filed against homebuilders, suppliers, and imporers of contaminated Chinese Drywall. Some larger manufacturers that have been named in the lawsuits are Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin, Knauf Gips, and Taishan Gypsum.

Dale,  What an excellent post.  I have heard about this Chinese Drywall before.  That is so scary to think it might be in a home you have for sale or in one you own.  I have  resolved not to buy products from China anymore if I know they came from there.  It seems they just want to poison us in every way they can.

Thank you kindly, It sure is not at all a good think for anyone. I sure don't understand, why the folks that used the Chinese Drywall, have not been made to go back. To remove it, and put non contaminated drywall in the home's they had worked on. I also do not buy anything thats made in China.
