I wrote a blog post recently about being penalized by Google for having state pages with excessive reciprocal links with other Realtors.  You can read more about it here: part 1 & part 2.

The good news is that I came out of the penalty box today and looks as though I came back where I left off.  I rank # 1 in Google for "Sarasota real estate" and bunch of other phrases.  The 60 day mark is July 9th as I was penalized May 9th.

Be careful with the useless reciprocal linking with each other. Matt Cutts of Google is very clear in this interview (forward to the 5:30 mark in the 2nd interview) that they do not like excessive reciprocal linking. If you have state pages and/or excessive reciprocal links with numerous Realtors around the country there is a possibility that you will be penalized. A penalty can be devastating if you get any business from ranking well in Google.

Lessons Learned:

  • Don't try to game the Google search engine. They will eventually figure you out.
  • Don't trade links with hundreds of Realtors around the country. Build links only for the benefit of your users, not your search engine rankings.
  • Build a site with tons of unique content, provide lots of value to visitors and eventually links will come with time.
  • Google isn't perfect.
  • If you rely on Google search results to feed you and your family you better have some money stashed away in the event you get penalized.
  • If you do make money off the web keep at least one eye on what is happening in the search engine world to stay competitive.
  • I rank fairly well in MSN and really don't get that much traffic from it.
  • Ranking very well in Google will bring tons of traffic to your website.
  • Being penalized by Google sucks.

This subject really scared me for awhile when I just started out in online marketing about 6 months ago.

But what I have realized is that if I focus on writing good content and updating my sites and blogs often, post in forums, pay it forward that I will be successful in google rankings.

Thanks for the post.

I'm fairly new to this.  So are we saying it actually can hurt you more than help you when people link to your webpage??  How do you know what to do?

Thanks for the info. It is nice to read a blog that is informative and adds value to the community. I mhave been working hard to my site's ranking up. Frisco Tx is a big market, but now I am on the 3rd page for some search phrases. I live by the rule "Content is King"

Marc,

Glad you're back!  And, 2 days early, too.  I know you put a lot of work into your site and your Google rank is deserved.  I wonder if Google penalized sites that they knew would rank extremely well, even without the reciprocal linking...  That would allow them to make the point very clear by having your sites reappear in strong positions, rather than being relegated to page 20 because the only thing the site had going for it was inflated rankings through link manipulation.

Whatever the logic, I know the last 60 days have not been great for business, so I'm glad you're back on top.  And, thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

Marc, thanks for the advice.  It's interesting to note that MSN isn't as effective as Google.  Does Yahoo fall somewhere in between?  I've been solicited by Yahoo for SEO programs, but haven't responded.

Marc: I liked: "Build a site with tons of unique content, provide lots of value to visitors and eventually links will come with time" - that is definitely one of - if not the largest part of working on our websites. Thanks for the reminders.

Thanks for sharing. I had heard this before, but a lot of folks are still promoting link farms. Bad idea!

No, I would not say that. Getting people to link your website is great. However, trading links with tons of Realtors is risky.

Good question Brian.  I don't know. I stopped watching Yahoo a long time ago. Their search results don't make any sense to me.  They definitely don't put the best sites first. I think the number of people using Yahoo for a search engines has been declining.

Thanks to everyone else for great responses.

Congratulations on being accepted back in the fold :) Guess they chose brute force attack on a big bunch and then gentle re-inclusion for those that weren't really all that bad :)

Man,

I am late to the SEO game and just got some recip links going and the whole state page up. Sigh. I have been working mostly on one way linking and all that but this is a drag!

Thank you very much for the article.  I put a lot of work in, but I think I will see what I can do about cutting out recip links.  I really appreciate the info and will put it to use.

Now I just have to figure out how to get to #1 without those links lol.
