ActiveRain Points: Did you know...?

By

Alright! Some of these you all might already know, but some of them I have just learned about myself after 2 months on Active Rain.

You get points on your blog when someone rates it, 1-5 stars.

Rate those posts!  I didn't understand how a blog with 10 comments could give me more points than my blog with 55 comments.  That's why! The ten people all left me a rating, where 55 people didn't know to!

You get more points if you are featured (Gold Star) but also featured in a group.

I can't give you exact amounts, but then again, it might go back to the rating system.  Jump in and correct me if I'm wrong!

You get 10% of the total number of points of those you invite (personal invitations).

I believe someone said it was their lucky day when they accidentally invited Della instead of a Dustin? ( Give me the link guys :)

The longer your ActiveRain profile, the more points you receive for it.

Maybe that explains why some have 75 testimonials posted at the end of their ActiveRain Profile....

Your posts have to be 50 words to count as posts, but sometimes html counts also.

I was trying to make  a "Pointless Remark"  (See my Groups) by posting a Blog Quiz, but apparently it gave me the 200 points.  Should I erase it to make sure fair is fair, even though I think it's a cute quiz anyhow?

You can receive 25 points for commenting on someone else's blog.

But it is limited to 10 a day.  Doesn't mean you have to stop commenting and scoring!

A post marked as advertising will still get you blogging posts.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't properly mark your advertising! If you are advertising to ActiveRain, mark it as such!

Did I miss any ones that need mentioning?

Lexa, Good job! I think you might have missed the one that gives points for linking AR to your website.

Hi Lexa -

I sure could have used all these pointers in October of 2006.  I stumbled upon most of them by accident.  When my husband Bob joined, I gave him an advantage of how to score some points quickly.  For those who are concerned with racking up some points - FAST, I'm sure they'll benefit from it.

The rating of posts, there's one I wish more paid attention too.  I'll admit, it took time to put myself in the habit of rating the posts I commented on.  It sure can help in boosting points.  Thanks for this post!

I was up in my points info, all except for being rated.  I had no idea that your post got extra credit for getting rated anything form 1-5.  Good to know.  Thanks!

Thanks so much for explaining this!  As a fairly new AR member I was very confused by the "points thing" and this has helped clairify it for me.  I never knew about the rating thing either so I will try to do that in the future to help out fellow bloggers.

Lexa,

THANK YOU for doing this for me.  I truly do appreciate knowing that I have provided some benefit to someone other than just plain silly stuff. And most of all thank you for that explanation of how AR works -- I am new and need this information and although I have a great mentor, TOM WEISS -- he just doesn't have time to tell me everything, but he certainly tries to.  And then luckily, I have folks like you that reinforce things or teach new thing altogether.

Also, the list you sent is going to be rated, I didn't know things worked like that either, but most importantly, that list is really a beneficial tool!

Thanks again!

Okay, one more question -- when I rate it, I then comment and then submit comment so that the rating gets submitted too?

Is there any other way to see how many points others gave you so we can see if the math is correct?  Besides the total number in our points summary?

Lexa, thanks for putting this out... the subject always interests members, both new & 'old' ones.  ActiveRain's method for figuring out points changes every so often (they like to keep us on our toes!) and everyone should keep that in mind.  Only AR's royalty are supposed to know the "secret recipe".

Also, I just published a post that I'm hoping will better explain ActiveRain's "Rate this Post" feature.

I think the exact point scoring system is a little hidden on blogs for a reason. But certainly the more popular blog posts get more points than just 200. I read a post from A/R one time saying they liked it to be a little secretive. I think probably so people couldn't game it.

I have noticed though that more comments on a post equal more points. I also think if people bookmark it through the image button on the page you get extra points. Of course points for getting featured either here or on localism. And I would also think that the rating had something to do with it too. I think a bunch of factors are all weighted differently to determine total points. Some blogs can even go below 200 points. They can lose points.

The points are evluated in the first few days or week. I'm not sure the timeframe, but I know there is one. Because say I have a post that is a month old and today 10 people leave me comments - well my points do not adjust any further.

On another blog we did this for fun... but the highest points I've received on one blog - featured on AR is 621 and 596 and 416 for a blog featured on Localism.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  Conversation is the point of a good blog!

Angie, I think you are right.  Just like the listing points, they will change it when they feel like it.  Especially if it is part of the controversy.

Sondra, click the rating at the top, then come to the bottom and comment.  When you submit, it goes into effect.  I haven't figured out if you can rate without clicking submit, like some sites have.

Leanne, I enjoy your article that focuses JUST on the rating system.

There are lots of ways to get points, as others have commented about linking to AR etc.  If you ever have technical difficulties or problems sometimes they throw an extra hundred your way also.  Contests and Special Submissions also give extra points.  Look at the Carnival of Content this week for an extra whopping 1,000 (You would have to write 5 blogs for that).

Take care everyone, and happy blogging!

Thanks Lexa!

I had just read Michelle Minch's post about rating. However, I still didn't realize the author receives points when we rate.

Great information!
