The Good Ole "GOLDEN RULE" & "KARMA" The Best "Code of Ethics" Ever

Reading AR member's posts everyday gives me the fodder, inspiration and incentive for so many of my posts. I'm very happy I joined the AR community and have really created some great long distance friends and relationships. I read a bunch of posts this morning as I do every morning because it gives me insight into our industry and the psychology and philosophy that drives it. Many of today's posts were about ethics, fiduciary responsibilities, the value of joining NAR and becoming a "Realtor" vs an "Agent", etc and they are all good messages. But isn't this all just plain ole good common sense?

I'm a Realtor and have been since shortly after I received my RE license. But I've never felt that I'm a member of any elite organization and more importantly I don't think anyone I've ever worked with gives a hoot or knows the dif. If it makes you feel good and you think threre's a personal benefit to belong to a professional organization then by all means join. But your morals and ethics go with you no matter how many organizations you belong to. It's the person not the organization that makes the PROFESSIONAL.

My main motivation for joining NAR was for the information, knowledge and education it offers its members. I've attended their workshops and seminars and have gained tremendous insight into the RE community overall and for this I am thankful. However, having said that I have also attended some non NAR workshops and educational programs that have given me a sound footing and positive direction in this industry as well.

I've believed in and adhered to the code of ethics for any and all organizations I've ever belonged to but they're all driven by two basic principles. If we as PROFESSIONALS, NAR or non NAR just adhere to the good ole "GOLDEN RULE" and/or "KARMA" depending on your philosophical and/or religious preference isn't that what it's really all about?

Have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. This is a fresh start and a new beginning for us all.

It is funny how we learn the golden rule prior to kindergarden and it still applies later in life.  Good post.

Absolutely the Golden Rule applies we don't have to belong to NAR to be ethical. The public does not know the difference between Realtor and non realtor to them we are all Realtors.

John and Janis,

Wonderful post!  I agree and was wondering if anyone else felt the same.

In the past I have been low keyed about professing my profession as being a Realtor as so many folks have not had pleasant experiences with a Realtor and it was due to lack of ethics!

Education! Education! Education!  The more we seek knowledge the more we have to offer!

Happy New Year!

John and Janis,

I don't think being a member of NAR is going to make a real estate professional behave in a more ethical manner than they naturally would, but the bottom line is that members of NAR are required to adhere to a specific code of ethics whereas a non-Realtor has no governing body to oversee behavior or settle disputes.

I agree with your points of "karma" and "the golden rule."  Truthfully, the oversight by NAR is a protection provided for the consumer, and in all professions, there are a few bad apples . . .

Happy New Year!
