Develop Your Personal Brand?

It is common practice for brokerages to provide agents with a free website and email address. That is very attractive to new licensees - it should be taken advantage of and appreciated.

However, the brokerage is promoting their "brand", not the agent's. Since they are providing the service at their expense it is only fitting that they control what is advertised and how it is disseminated.

In my opinion, the time for a new licensee to establish their own "brand" is the day they start in the business. A domain name with email, easy-to-use design templates and web hosting can be purchased from GoDaddy for abiut $15.00 per month. There are many advantages, but most importantly, You
  • are the focus of the website.
  • control the data to be on the site
  • develop the "look"
  • are the only person with access to your email
  • determine the level of SEO and where the site will be placed.
  • can modify the site as your market plans develop or change
There is no reason to refuse a free website from your broker. However, it is not at all unusual to see agents with several years in the business whose only website is the one provided by the brokerage. It makes you wonder if they really understand the value of developing a personal brand.
