We took a trip up to Duluth as a year end retreat. We stayed in Canal Park at the Hamptom Inn and had a great view of the lake from our 3rd floor room. After getting settled in our room and seeing the lakefront walk, we decided to take our first venture outdoors. We snapped a few photos along the way with the sun setting behind the Aerial lift bridge.
After our walk a dip in the hot tub was in order to warm back up. We also stopped by Little Angies for a mexican meal.
The next day a trip up to Gooseberry Falls State Park was in order. When we arrived a signature was needed for a closing, so the visitor center accepted a fax and emailed it back for me. Anyway, time to hike out to the falls and the lake. They had quite a bit of rain up here as well so the paths were quite icy. We skipped the boots and went with tennis shoes for better traction. We started by going up to the upper falls just under the Highway 61 bridge. The trail got progressively worse but we kept going to the top of the falls and snapped this photo of my wife.
I had already slipped on the ice once so we decided to head down to the lower falls and then to the lake. The falls were completely iced over and quite spectacular as seen here.
From here we headed down to the lake, about a mile further down the trail. The scene was mostly black and white, with some evergreens for a green. Then we came across some Mountain Ash trees with their berries stil on them which provided a brilliant red to the photo.
The picnic table flats down by the Lake were extremely slick and I fell once again, so we decided not to venture too close to the lake. What a great way to see this area. We have camped and hiked here many times in the summer but this was our first winter trip. Make sure to come up to the North Shore and see these great sights.
