Don't take it personal

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Century 21 Sherlock Homes

Don't take it personal I read that somewhere, I don't remember where (I can't remember what I had for breakfast) it struck me and stayed with me and so maybe this will be my mantra for 2010.  What it means to me is that people do and say what they do and say not because they are interreacting with me, I probably don't even enter into the mix.  People do and say and act the way the do because of who they are.  They act that way with everyone.

Great relief, nasty people are nasty simply because they are nasty.  I am off the hook, wahoo for me. I need to not take it personal, not get my feelings hurt or my ego injured.  I shall put my energy elsewhere thank you very much.  The flip side of this is that really nice and kind people are also that way because that's how they are, no pat of the back for old Lizzie.  I did not cause them to be nice and so I get no points for bettering the planet.

This is my goal for 2010, don't take it personal and therefore no blaming others for my bad behavior.

Liz,

Great outlook for the new year. Life is not worth worrying about what someone else thinks.

Have a great 2010.

Hello Liz; IMO,  it is also something that could be used for Sellers. Such as: "Mr. Seller don't take it personal that the market is not agreeing with your expectations on price!"  LOL. Goodbye to 2009 as it was a lot of work to get everyone to not take things too personal.

Liz, you are so right. So many people spend too much time being frustrated with something said that really wasn't personal.  And Mary, great tip!

In this business you can't take it personal, just say next and don't worry about it. Good tip.

A great reminder for us all.  Toughen up the skin and accept the things you can not change.

Lauren Bianco  Dear Liz,

As a fellow sensitive-soul as well as being new to this biz, I appreciate your comments on why not to take things/people so personally.  And you're correct, if we conduct ourselves professionally, perform our duties efficiently and behave with integrity other people's poor behaviors/reactions will not really be about us personally at all.

If we allow the tormented ones to hurt us, it will only be that much harder to get up the next day and do it all again.  As a human resources professional for many years prior to real estate I've learned the real issues are rarely about you at all.  Let's pay closer attention to the majority of wonderful people we work with everyday to get us through! Be well and thanks for your thoughts! Lauren.
