It's A Whole Lot Colder Up North!Big South Fork, Tennessee is horse country and horse owners here plan for ease of maintenance during winter months.

Horses prefer to go in and out at will so most barns are simple shelters, providing a place to get out of inclement weather and a quiet place to eat.

Some horses are blanketed but it's not necessary, and most aren't. I, personally, use waterproof/breathable "Weatherbeeta" rain sheets for turnout on really raw, wet days and, the few times each year that it is in the low 20's, waterproof/breathable insulated rugs that have a long drop, down to their knees. A tail flap keeps the wind from whistling up their backsides.

Water in the trough is kept from freezing with a simple "immersion" heating element that I bought at the local Fentress County Farmers Co-op, so that simplifies the task of keeping fresh water available.

I use extra shavings on cold nights for a soft, dry place to sleep. A little hot water added to their grain morning and evening liquefies the molasses and puts a welcome warm meal in their bellies, to take the chill off.

Then it's time to go stand in the sunshine and eat hay. Life is good!

Horsekeeping Is Simple In This Temperate Climate

Hi, Rita. Thanks. They ARE lucky. They have a small safe barn with a steady routine and good care, and they are loved....doesn't get any better than that! They also have a VERY active social life so they certainly aren't standing around being bored!

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off! If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
