UConn Goes 3 for 3 to start the New Year

For those of us that are UConn grads and sports enthusiasts, this day could not have been better

Our 3 major sports teams were all in action with a great deal at stake for all.

At noon, our men's basketball team, still trying to find an identity for themselves were facing Notre Dame at their Hartford home. Although not ranked, Notre Dame was a tough game because of their senior experience and the depth of their team. At the end of the game, however, it was UConn 82 Notre Dame 70

Almost immediately after the UConn football team was waiting for opening kick off of the PapaJohns Bowl in Birmingham, AL against the Univ of S Carolina. This was a match up of a team from the best football conference in the country against the fledgling Huskies. UConn dominated the game in every way and came away with the 20-7 win

Simultaneously, in South Orange NJ, the only predictable game was underway with the UConn women's team against Seton Hall. The only mystery here was the final score, UConn 91 Seton Hall 24.

My real estate obligations got in the way of the mens basketball game, but I had the TV to my self for the other 2 games. No fingers ever clicked faster than mine did today.

What a great way to start the New Year and the real weekend.

Claude they played almost flawless. Spurrier was completely out coached and the boys out played SC the entire game. The only problem here is our coach is getting a great deal of National publicity and over the next couple of years it may be hard to keep him.

Craig, you sound like the Yankee fans up here. Let anybody else have a moment of glory and somebody tries to bust the balloon. The only way we play NC on the men's side will be in the NCAA's and that will probably be another one of those 'neutral site' games in Charlotte or Greensboro.

Our women play UNC this month which will probably be a decent game but I don't see the UNC women beating them. It actually looks like we could be doing another undefeated National Championship year.

BTW in case you actually keep track of something like that, we are the ONLY div 1 school to have both men's and women's BB National Champions in the same year, and as always, thanks for stopping

Jim & Linda  The men are shaky this year but the women look real good. Thanks for stopping.

Just messing with you Ed. When I lived in NYC, I was a big fan of the UConn Huskies. I have a lot of friends in CT.

Anyway, I'm well aware of the time when both the men's and women's teams won the title in the same year. Simply an amazing feat.

I don't think UNC is good enough this year, but if we do see you in the final 4, we can talk some smack then!

Until then, have a great season my friend!

Anna, It was one football bowl game and 2 basketball games. I posted the blog and on ESPN's Sportscenter @ 7 they interchanged the highlights of the 3 games and my blog title was the headline on the Hartford Courant Sports Page today. It was the uniqueness of the 3 games almost simultaneously and all 3 a win.

Carra it was a very trying 4 hours but most rewarding, and 70 days but who's counting?

Craig and you have a few more so we'll reserve the comments until April. Game temporarily suspended
