104 Comments on When will Active Rain Purge its member list?
This is what I just posted on Lenn's blog
I do think AR should purge people who don't log in in a reasonable time frame. 6 months? 12 months? Recently I was looking to place a referral and first place I came was to AR. 1. Number one agent in the county I wanted ... had her cell phone disconnected. 2. Number two was no longer in the business. I went out of AR to find a referral agent because I had to ...
Ellie - I asked Brad Andersohn that question once, because the top REALTOR in our county (at that time) was inactive. He said the only way members are removed is if they contact AR and ask to be removed. I mentioned it to the inactive agent one day when I saw her and she said that the branch secretary at our office was going to take care of it, which did not happen. I am now the number one agent in our county and the inactive agent is the number two agent so people that visit Active Rain will only have one active agent to contact if they look at the featured agents. I guess that is really a good thing for me.
Ellie, it is trickie with the deletions based on inactivity with Active Rain. Many are still active REALTORS, some taking a leave of absence or other jobs, but their blogs were at one time written and posted by them, so in that sense they should stay active members. Tough call, but I see your point. What also about deceased members?
I understand what you are saying, Ellie. But, I think that purging may be a bit drastic. I think the AR system is set up so that those that participate actively, rise to the top. While those who don't, simply melt away into the background. They may not be actively blogging for any number of reasons. I have read several posts of people who have been with Active Rain for a couple of years but only recently decided to get on the ball and start blogging. So, like I said, purging may be a bit drastic. You do make a valid argument, though. I have to say.
I think the number was around 30k members when I joined AR. I too wonder how many of the 169,467 are inactive members.
Hi Ellie. I happen to like the trilogy in its book forms and in the movies. At this point in time purging inactive accounts is trivial compared to other more important things. ~ Lana
I agree with Lenn that the inactive people may be reading and see no reason to purge them.
I signed up and didn't do anything for a year. I'm now on here almost every day. I don't know if I would have felt welcome to come back if somebody had purged me for being inactive.
Holy cow, it's true - we do get points for logging in! Sweet.
I think it would be a huge undertaking to start purging people; a year goes by so quickly, and I bet that some have made it their 2010 resolution to be 'active' in the 'rain' this year. I personally don't see a need for it. Besides, the more members there are, and the higher up we go in rank, the better we look, right? :)
I am one of those people who do not blog, but I read from AR every single day. I do not blog or post because I have very limited skill as a writer. I get a great deal from reading on AR. I do make comments from time to time, but even that is difficult for me. If the comment section did not have spell check I would never write anything.
Ellie: But... yes, there's the big BUT. But... if Active Rain purges all of the members who have not posted in a year, or at least puts them in an "inactive" category... then they could not longer "blare" that they have over 160,000 members. So really, I don't know what would be best for the God and Goddess Rainers to do.
I guess I should modify the saying of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"... to now say... "If it ain't BADLY broken, don't fix it." I dunno... but thanks for your post... it has brought some interesting comments.
@ Gary in # 89: You ask about "deceased" members. In a case like this... I would just leave it alone. There are some Active Rainers who have passed away... who are missed very much by many of the "present" members. They, and we, sometimes get some solace from going back, visiting their blogs, and reading their posts. I would vote for just leaving their blogs as they are... leave it up to those who knew them personally.
Well this is an interesting topic. Seems to make sense since there's little benefit, yet if there were comments and blogs from the past they might be helpful. Agents out of the business? I dont' spend my time seeking agents. I post and read comments and do some blogging. The site is called ActiveRain. "Active" should stand for something.
I have seen some members with over 150,000 points who have not posted in over a year. I think in cases like this they should be penalized points. It seems that several years ago therer were opportunities to score high points by making many meaningless entries before AR instituted a 10 postings per week limit to stop junk postings. AR should review any members file who has not posted in a year and deduct penalty points. If they are not active, they should not appear at the top of area listings.
Ellie I think it would be interesting to see the effects of purging for curiosity's sake. But in actuality I don't see any real advantage in purging AR's membership. Far too many people benefit from this platform as is. Great thought provoking post.
I suggest removal of the professionals that leave the business. Active Rain can send an email after one-year of no activity and request a reply to determine if he or she still wants to remain an active member.
If no reply is received after three emails that individual can be removed. Alternatively, that member could remain on that site but be noted as inactive.
Inactive members get passed. While it takes longer for some than others, the rain gods modify the point system to generate the results they desire.
I think AR's resources are better spent working on system issues, versus chasing ghosts.
Getting excited and committing to something then fading away is part of human nature. How do you think Health Clubs stay in business. My Health Club is packed this time of year and I don't expect I'll see many of those faces by February. Let them stay.
I'd like to hear from ActiveRain... what percentage of the AR members have not logged in for over a year? Just curious.
It would be a monumental task for the staff at AR to go through and examine each member to see if their license is current, what about their brokerage.....Don't even hint at it! MLS's leave it up to real estate website/IDX vendors to police their rules and regulations...if the powers that be get a whiff of the idea, we'll never hear from AR staff again, they'll be bogged down with adminstrative duties for eternity. I don't see the harm in the "dead weight," if someone made a New Year's resolution to be more active with blogging, it would be very discouraging to see that their originally free outside blog account now costs $30 a month. My husband hates LOTR too, couldn't even make it through the 1st one in the movie theater, on the other hand...I own the trilogy and watch at least twice a year :)
Hi I disagree I'm slower than slow and just ggetting the hang of it. I am going to get my colleagues on it and promote it. The search button is unbelievable. How do I get bonus points for inviting people on?
