Hopefully More Agents will Leave the Business

By
Real Estate Agent with Carolina One Real Estate

As I was reading the business section of the Monday paper, the real estate section has info about the new board members of the Charleston Trident Board of Realtors, blah, blah, blah - the interesting part was the stat about membership.

In 2007, there were over 5000 licensed real estate agents in the Charleston area.

As of Jan 1st, 2010, we are down to 3930 licensed agent - a 20% drop.

Nothing personal but I hope we see another 20% drop this year!!!

Our duty as professional agents is to inform consumers that using an experienced, professional agent is a must. Using your neighbor or your cousin rarely benefits the seller or buyer. If more buyers and sellers treated selected an agent like a job interview, more of these part-timers would be forced out of the business.

So - another resolution for me to to encourgage people to use professional agents...whether it be me or someone else. Selling or buying a home is too important to trust to your cousin who waits tables at night and really needs your help to break into the business.

Happy New Year!

I have been discourage about how agents who have been in the business for years are not as good as some of the newbies. Years in a profession does not give you quality and I wish buyers and sellers knew that.

Illinois just signed into law that after Apri 2011 there will be no more Salesperson's licenses issued.  Any agent currently in the business will have to have a Broker's license by April 2012 or will no longer be able to sell.  We will either have a Broker's license or Managing Broker's license. I think with more education requirements we will have more people leaving the business.

Randall, There are less agents here too. I don't know the numbers but I'm curious. Not everyone could stick it out when the market was so tough. It's frustrating to me when I can't get in touch with an agent on their listing and they can't call me until they leave their other job at 6 p.m. It's pretty hard to do business that way.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see what would happen if all states adopted the same practice as Laura states in her comment on Illinois?

Laura - that is a big issue in our business, part-times who do not know what they are doing

Sally & David - thanks for the comment

Mandy - you are right there

Laura - would love to see them do that in South Carolina

Jen  - Many have the secodn jobs here as well and still act they like know everything and are the best agents in town-- so why another job?? I agree, would be great to see our states follow the lead of Illinois

Dear Randall,

We are in the same boat in Austin. When I joined ABOR in early 2007, there were over 14,000 Realtors/Brokers. Now the number is hovering just under 8,000. It could and probably will keep dropping as part-timers drop out.
