I'm not in sales!

By
Real Estate Agent with Allen Tate

Just a short rant for this post.

I went to a house warming party at a past client's house the other night. Good food, good friends, good start to the night.

During conversation with one of the other guests, she said something that bugged me. I forget what we were talking about but her response to something that was said was "Oh yea, well you're in sales so I'm sure you understand."

After she said it, I reeled back as if someone had smacked me.

I'm not in sales! I'm a real estate advisor. I don't sell houses. As a buyer's agent for my team, I help buyer's find their dream homes.

How long until all of the 'bad eggs' get out of our business and leave the rest of us to be trusted advisors?

Hi Amy,

I wish I got paid for advice.  I receive my compensation only when a purchase closes, in other words when it SELLS.  I have been in professional sales for many years.  Certainly there are bad eggs in every field of sales I've been around, but I'm not ashamed to be in sales.  I easily separate myself from those by displaying character and ethics and my success through the years has born that out.

Dan,

I like your perspective. I guess the word "sales" to me has become a dirty word. Maybe it was in the way she said it.

Amy,

I don't worry about titles and misperceptions most of the time.  I am definitely in sales.  Not house sales, as I am not an onsite agent.  I sell services.  It does confuse people who do not understand that we sell our services, close on an agency agreement, and having finished the sales process we then consult with our clients to help them reach their goals.

That all is a big concept for folks who do not grasp intangible concepts.
