And a super-packed answer so we’ll keep it simple here… Social media is the answer to old ways of advertising and gaining friends and customers. It utilizes various platforms to attract people looking for what you have to offer while also providing a means to gain valuable feedback from these people to help you further target your market. So what does all this mean?
You can utilize social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube and Digg and socialize to meet like-minded people and find targeted connections that are already looking for what you have to offer. Social media is really taking over general media strategies because of its effectiveness and the fact that it is ‘for the people, by the people’ which has tremendous power to grow your business because people are able to tell you what they want and you are able to go out and find people saying they have a need for what you have to offer.
Compare this to a tv commercial which is ‘old school’ media. A lot of money needs to be spent in advertising because all types of people have tuned in to watch the same show. Well, social media allows you to brand yourself as You, Inc. and therefore, attract an audience of like-minded people that are already at the edge of their seats to see what it is you have to offer.
Social media allows you to build a following of people that know, like and trust you which is how the big companies have been making their money all along. You just now have the opportunity to utilize the most powerful form of media today (and usually for free) to build a loyal following of customers that are waiting to see what you’ll have next.
