First, it’s important that the substantive context be clear: For seven years after 9/11, while our national security was overwhelmingly focused on Iraq — a country that had no Al Qaeda presence before our invasion — Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda's leadership was able to set up camp in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where they continued to plot attacks against the United States. Meanwhile, Al Qaeda also regenerated in places like Yemen and Somalia, establishing new safe havens that have grown over a period of years.
It was President Obama who finally implemented a strategy of winding down the war in Iraq and actually focusing our resources on the war against Al Qaeda — more than doubling our troops in Afghanistan and building partnerships to target Al Qaeda’s safe havens in Yemen and Somalia.
And in less than one year, we have already seen many Al Qaeda leaders taken out, our alliances strengthened and the pressure on al Qaeda increased worldwide.

To put it simply: This President is not interested in bellicose rhetoric, he is focused on action.
Seven years of bellicose rhetoric failed to reduce the threat from Al Qaeda and succeeded in dividing this country. And it seems strangely off-key now, at a time when our country is under attack, for the architect of those policies to be attacking the President.

                 ******************************
To those who claim that Cheney "kept the American people safe for 7 years" ... SHAME on him and on you for believing his drivel.
He and Bush put thousands of our troops at risk with their false statements and their "be afraid" control. Try telling the families of our precious lost troops that THEY kept us safe.
The troops kept us safe in a theater vastly more difficult because of the anti-American hatred Cheney and Bush sowed.
Bush and Cheney kept us safe...except for the worst attack on our homeland since Pearl Harbor... They also really kept the economy rolling...except for the worst economic collapse since the great depression. 60% of the time they were right every time!
Odd that the "right" gave these criminals EIGHT years to destroy our country and they have not let up on Obama for a moment since January 20th......

Cheney kept his bank account fat and that's all he did.  I think Dubya should pop him hard in the jaw for helping screw up his presidency.  Dubya got dealt a tough hand in Sept 2001 and started out with the appropriate response.  Somewhere along the way he was sidetracked into this HUGE mess and I'm pretty sure Cheney and Rumsfeld were involved.  Iraq?  C'mon.

It's amazing to me that we are FINALLY going after Al Qaeda and NOW people are complaining about the president.  Where were the complaints when the president completely ignored Al Qaeda and invaded Iraq? Those same people complaining now sat buy and pretended invading Iraq was a fine idea.

I don't know where the statistic originates, but i have seen it in several sources now...

One third of all terrorist attacks since 9/11/2001 were in 2009.

So, from 2002-2008 there were twice as many attacks as 2009.  Maybe wandering around the world apologizing isn't the best strategy.

Lane,  You should know facts and stats don't work or matter here.  Just start hating Bush and anyone and everything that has to do with him and you will be on track.  I can't wait to see what is being said 7 or 8 years from now!!

And I'm sure you know that stats can be manipulated to serve one's purpose.  For example, one could easily map out the movement of enemies towards Iraq during 03-08 and if one wanted to, one could count said attacks as terrorist activity.

So, Tchaka, are you saying that there were fewer terrorist attacks under Bush?  If that is the case, then Obama's "Weakness Doctrine" is even less successful...
