A Trip to the Tropical Paradise of Omaha, Nebraska

By

We just spent the last week and a half moving Mike's mom back to the midwest. We drove and the track out was long and grueling.

Our trip there involved a drive up I-15 through Salt Lake City to I-80 through Wyoming. We planned a stay in Cheyenne and there was no room at the Inn for us (failed to make reservations in case we didn't make it that far!) due to a baseball tournament. After searching for almost an hour and a half we found one room with one king sized bed and that room went to Mike's brother, Mother and our kids. We (the monster drivers) slept in our Explorer and I found out that I was not as young as I used to be!

We trekked on and finally made it, unloaded the truck and began our family visits. We stayed with Mike's dad first in Carter Lake, Iowa and made a trip to the Old Market in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska. I cannot believe how downtown is expanding, building and looking so great! Everything was beautiful and green.

We spent the Fourth of July holiday at my brother's house in Cheyenne Estates across from Tiburon in Gretna, Nebraska. It was so great to be with family and relish the four days we had to spend there!

The weather was very humid and seemed like in the nineties, temperature wise. Everyone told us Las Vegas was roasting but I couldn't wait to get back. I would rather take the heat over the humidity. I know, I am an odd duck!

We left early Friday morning and drove to Grand Junction, Colorado. I thought of some of my favorite bloggers: Mariana Wagner (Colo Springs) when we were driving through Denver and Doug Lindstrom when we were driving through Loveland. I couldn't believe the copious amounts of snow that still hung around from Loveland to Vail Pass and we even encountered snow for about 1 minute when we were on the Vail side of Vail Pass!

It was a beautiful drive and when we hit St George and took a break it was a beautiful balmy 107 degrees with the blast heat furnace wind blowing. I could smell home!

My kids stayed back and will be visiting grandparents, aunts and uncles for another three weeks while Mike and I enjoy cleaning and organizing the home for the next couple of days and having it stay that way for several weeks.

I worked on the trip a bit, it is so great to have a PDA now. It seems like I can go anywhere and conduct business without worrying about logging on to a computer! So tomorrow I start back to working the long days but it is SOOO good to be home! Sigh!

I promised Tony Marriott I would take lots of pictures and I sure had plenty of opportunities but my camera got packed up in the moving van and I was just plain too beat by the time we were coming home!

Miss Desiree wrote me a nice personal note this AM asking where I have been! There is the synopsis!

All the Best,
Renee Burrows

Sounds like quite the journey..... I did a shorter getaway for the Fourth and enjoyed the cool comforts of Maine with temps in the 70's.  Thought of you as I saw the news of the Las Vegas heat wave...

There is nothing like sleeping in a car or on the floor to let you know your age.  Anyone over 18 just aint made for it.  Now, I realize you're just barely past 18, but there is a strict age limit.  You must obey the restrictions.

Hi Renee. Wink. Wink...

Well no wonder you didn't have any B.S. for the bag. You've been on holiday. Good for you.

P.S. Don't get to used to the clean house. Every time my grand children visit they remind me of just how good that clean house really feels :)

TLW...ROAR!

My wife and I drove up to Omaha for a weekend last year.  I was really pleasantly surprised.  The Old Town area is really a great Saturday afternoon.  The city has come a long, long way since my last visit about 20 years ago.

Welcome Back - My kids came home on the 3rd from 2 weeks and their grandparents, and we LOVED having the house to ourselves. I thought I would organize, clean, enjoy some me time by the pool... none of that happened - I worked 24/7. Good thing I have a passion for what I do!

Renee,

Glad to see you did some relaxing ....unless helping the relatives was a bit of a workout.:) I returned a few weeks ago from our first vacation to AZ and it was fabulous..I was thinking of you and Tony while there..because he was on the road and from what I hear you were only a few hours away from Phoenix. The heat was about 107 when we were there and I was kind of expecting it since i have been to both Vegas and AZ and know it is very hot and dry.

Renee - welcome home - I get the Wyoming part more than I care to... two of our 5 children live there - I generally end up crashing on the sofa which is not much better than the back of an SUV - but at least it is near the AC -

"On the Road Again"  That sounds like one of those types of adventures where the discomfort of being on the road for so long and crashing in the car will only make for better stories as the years go on!

We have family in Omaha and have been there many times. We also lived in Des Moines for a little over a year - so I am somewhat familiar with the area. I just can't get used to how cold it gets there. It is a unique cold from other areas. brrrrrrrr - be glad your trip was in the summer :)

Dan:  Wow, 70's?  My teeth would be chattering

CEG:  ROFL!

TLW:  LOL!  I love the clean house but I miss my kids at this point :(  I miss the:  mom I need some more contacts RIGHT NOW, mom I am having my girlfriends spend the night, mom I need a ride to the movie theater yesterday.  I miss them taking 3 AM swims and trashing the back yard and being so mad that I wake them up at 7 to clean it.  It sounds like my kids run all over me but they are just little busy bodies.

Chris:  Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the old market and I was there a year ago!

Leigh:  That is what I am doing, tons of work!

Thomas:  Thank  you for your kind comments!

Neal:  I love it this way, wouldn't have it any other way!  The other night my husband and I were at the doggie park and it was 103 according to my car thermometer at 10:15 PM

Michele:  I was shocked but pleasantly surprised too!

Tony:  Major missed opportunities but I soaked up and enjoyed every moment!

Desiree:

David:  Had to figure out what that is.  I guess it is here Monday, do I make reservations?

Fran:  ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thesa:  When you are from here, Wyoming is a huge unplugged A/C.  It was hilarious, we were driving down 80 through WY and it was about 90 degrees.  Everyone was complaining how hot it was, that must be hot for WY but it was cool for us.

Rey:  We love road trips.  We are gluttons like that :)

Bob:  hopefully we won't have to do it again.  In all of our years of long road trips, we have never had that problem!

Monika:  YES!  Like your motor home ~ home away from home!

Tom:  ROFL, probably not!

Angie:  Even though it was summer ~ still too dang humid!
