The sharpest tool in the shed is the one that pays regular visits to the grindstone.
Every tool has its season and there's a season for every tool.
When a tool is in its season, maintenance of that tool happens as needed, on the spot , , , or not at all because there's work to be done.
Off season, the tool might not make it to the sharpener because why?
It's doesn't need to be sharp when it's not in use.
Just as a roof problem doesn't leak when it's not raining . . . and when it IS raining, it's too wet up there to fix it.
The smart tool user knows that in the off season, the tools get pampered . . . a good sharpening and some conditioning oil . . . Then nicely protected til the season.
The best craftsmen pamper their tools regardless of the season.
How are you with your career?
I believe every tool and every human has the same potential . . . wherein lies the difference is the discipline of sufficient sharpening.
so . . .
Word on the street is that the first 6 months of 2010 are likely gonna be relatively good in terms of real estate market activity . . .
The potentially bad news is that the last 6 months of the year may sag a bit in the wake of the Federal reserve (perhaps) shifting their investment strategy away from mortgage backed securities thereby increasing interest rates . . . the potential for a flood of new foreclosures hitting the open market . . . and the likelihood of the home buyer tax credit expiring without renewal.
I'm not singing doom and gloom because I know that as things improve and then potentially weaken for us professionals . . . the gap between the "men and the boys" will widen because the "men" will have continually sharpened their tools even through the "good" first 1/2 of the year.
The "boys" will frolic and bask in the glory of easier success and lose focus on the utility of focus.
so . . .
Educating yourself is probably more critical NOW than ever . . . so that when weirdness happens, your brain will be sharp and nimble and adept and adaptable to new and different environments as they emerge.
When asked what my New Years Resolution is in 2010, my answer came immediately to mind . . . to attend more education . . . In my case, that will include every opportunity that shows up with respect to Leadership training and/or new Leadership opportunities,
The first person I ever heard talk of "sharpening your saw" was Steven Covey . . . and I'll never forget it.
One more tip . . . The most impactful way to educate yourself is to teach others :-)
Happy Learning to you!
Best,
b
