The Placer SPCA is providing assistance to Placer County residents that are having a tough time financially but are responsible caregivers.  Job losses and foreclosures have made it hard not just for people but also for pets.  How is the Placer SPCA's "SOS" Program helping?  They are helping pets and their owners stay together by providing temporary housing, helping with pet deposits for the owners that are moving into a rental, donating pet food and even offering veterinary treatments for animals with life threatening conditions.

For more information on this SOS Program, call (916) 782-SPCA (7722) ext. 103 or (530) 885-PETS (7387) ext. 103.  You can also email operations@placerspca.org.

You can visit the Placer SPCA website for more information or to download an application.

Hello Debbie,

Thank you for sharing the information about Placer SPCA'S SOS Program.  What a wonderful program!  It would be great if more animal shelters and rescue groups followed suit and did something similar to help animals who are victims of the foreclosure crisis.

Rita...I agree, so many pets are being neglected or are being forced into shelters because their owners are losing their houses.  So very sad.  Maybe others will catch on and start adopting programs like this!  Happy new year!

Even worse is when people simply leave their pets behind to fend for themselves. I would rather they turn the pets over to the shelters. At least they have someone to look out for them, and who would be actively looking for forever parents to adopt them.

Pacita, I think that is why this program was started to make it more feasible for people to take their pets and not leave them.  I have walked into houses where pets were left behind and that just makes me sick!

I drove 300 miles to rescue my new little girl SUGAR.  She is a chiweenie pug.  That's a chichuachua, dashchaund and pug.  I found her on Petfinders and fell in love with her.  She was at the City Animal Shelter in a ittle town called Shafter (near Bakersfield).  I think it is so important to adopt rather than go to puppy breeders as you never know their background.   Thanks for loving animals.

Connie - The reddish dog in the top picture is one I adopted.  I found him on Petfinder too, only I only had to drive 20 miles! He had been abandoned as a puppy in a dumpster.  :-(
