Hello,

I personally feel that I will pay more for a product that better maintains/effects OUR environment than a less expensive one that burns fossil fuel all day long, but not everyone feels that way. Money still motivates - always has and always will to a certain degree.

So I found an insert in my last power bill (San Diego Gas & Electric) that suggested I can save money on my power bill by using/purchasing "green products". Here is the link:

http://www.sdge.com/residential/rebates_services.shtml

Is there anyone in the area that is familiar with going about this?  What I am looking for, if possible, are monetary benefits to using green products. If we can find products that are about the same cost, or less (even if it takes time to realize those savings), it will be much easier to promote green products and help protect OUR environment.

I welcome your comments,

ps. If you noticed my deliberate usage of "our environment" rather than "the environment" i hope you will continue this usage. Using "the" denotes the environment as something other, something foreign, and this needs to be changed. It is clear that we are connected to our environment, a part of it, and our language needs to reflect that. People have a natural tendency to help that which is connected to them and disregard that which is foreign, so let's do something simple by using language to correct the public viewing of OUR environment so that we can gain support in bettering things!

Excellent point in your "ps".  I'm not sure if we have that option in our area (Texas) , but I'm going to look into it.

Adam - A warm welcome to the Active Rain Community!

Great post and good questions. I have been involved in a project in Michigan in which the homeowner has erected a wind generator and is selling power back to the electric company. Pretty cool! I think there are many resources out there and we need to check them out and then spread the word on our findings - Active Rain  is a great community for that! In Michigan, we have Great Lakes Renewable Energy.  They serve as a great resource to the community and the first stop for education in energy savings. I would also check out The Alliance to Save Energy

Share with us your findings!

I also like your ps!

Thanks, Stacy! Let me know what you find. I'm in the process of researching the practicality of Power company offered savings and will let you know what I find....  =_)

Mary,

I appreciate the warm welcome - I've read and enjoyed some of your posts in my short time here already so thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.

In San Diego, I have seen & heard of solar creating more energy than the homeowner uses and there is a debate whether or not the power company actually owes the homeowner cash when this happens or not....my vote is for yes!

I'm finding out that this area of green/sustainable housing could really provide some of my on the job passion, the kind we so often need in the workplace. I look forward to learning more about with you and the rest of the eco-allstars.

Thanks Adam! for the warm comments!

About Job Passion - Yes! This will do it! I just jumped in both feet to the ECO Scene back around February. THEN  I was introduced to Active Rain and found the ECO AllStars and it has just blossomed into the most wonderful melting pot of passions! They both keep me alive and well! I have to remind myself to go over to the main board and see what else is going on at times - what a very active group we have with remarkable ideas!

And yes...I think the power company should pay the "generator" of the power also!
