Testing Well Water

By
Real Estate Agent with Bergstrom Realty Inc., Brokerage

The quality of your well water can change over time, it's recommended that you check the quality at least 3 times a year, of course if the water is suspect, test it. In the Halton Region this is a free test performed by the health department. To find the location to pick up the testing kit follow this link: http://www.halton.ca/Health/services/water_quality/testing_water_samples.htm#Q3

So, now that you know where to get the testing kit, your wondering what you do next. You would have been given instructions with the testing kit but if you ignored that, then follow here.

1. Remove the strainer screen from the faucet if there is one on it,

2. Let the cold water run for 3 - 5 minutes,

3. Place one of the collection bottles under the tap and fill to the line, ensure you do not touch the top of the bottle as you could possibly contaminate the sample, and the test would have to be repeated.

4. Do the same with the second collection bottle, if provided.

5. Fill out the form and return it and the samples to the collection point as shown in the above link.

6. IMPORTANT - These samples must be returned to the collection point within 24 hours, if you cannot bring it in right away keep it refrigerated until you can, again within the 24 hour period.

7. You can get the results by calling the Ministry of Health Laboratory within 3-5 business days, or you can wait to have the results mailed to you within 7-10 business days from the date of submission.

This is a simply exercise that will keep you and your family safe and does not cost you anything but your time.
