"Baby, it's cold outside"... protect your plants

San Antonio enjoyed a mild winter last year with month after month of sunny days, high blue skies, and lovely weather.  Not so this year.  Like the rest of the country, we are experiencing cold weather with freezing temperatures on some nights.  Gardeners should keep an eye on weather forecasts and be prepared for a freeze.  Help your plants survive freezing temperatures with these simple steps:

~ Remember to water if your plants need it. Move delicate potted plants indoors, especially tropical plants.  If you are unsure if they should be moved indoors, then move them indoors anyway.

Give your plants a fresh blanket of mulch. Together with moist soil, mulch helps protect roots.

~ Cover flowering plants such as azaleas, camellias, and fruit trees with sheets or blankets. Anchor the covers with bricks, rocks, or other heavy objects.

~ You can use nursery pots or cardboard boxes to create minigreenhouses for small plants.

~  If freezing rain is forecast, cover plants with sheets and blankets, then cover with a heavy plastic and anchor with bricks and stones.

After the freeze ~ Do not wash frost or ice off plants the morning after a freeze. Doing so will raise the temperature too quickly and will likely damage the plant's cell tissues.

Khris and I lug everything ( about 4 pickup loads of potted plants into a green house room each winter and then lug them out again in spring. The survival rate is good. We have tried to plant outdoor plants that are cold durable. We got tired of trying to do emergency measures every year.

Hope your new year is great!

Great Minds Think Alike :)

It seems that at the same time I was writing my "winter blast/chill" blog, our friend Shirley was writing her own.

Looking forward to a long day of working on my web site and goals for 2010.

I must say, Shirley's blog is a bit more descriptive than mine.  I was cold from putting those things on my faucets outside, that's my excuse.  Don't forget the pipes!!!

Be safe and don't forget your pets are "people" too.

Shirley - Great advice - It is also cold here in Tampa 27 last night and going down to 26 for tonight.  The average low for us is 50 in January and that is our temperature for the daytime.

Good luck to you and your plants Shirley!  I'm not used to doing any of that sort of thing this time of year, ( anytime for that matter) LOL!  but I know it is cumbersome.

What do you mean, "Like the rest of the country...."? We've had an extremely dry and warm winter, yet everyone said we would have a bad El Niño winter. It's been so dry and warm and warm that spring has sprung here: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1429191/the-activerain-nature-station-spring-has-spring-in-san-diego
