I'll Have What She's Having

By

From the time I was a kid of about seven, I have been interested in cameras.  I remember saving my 50 cent a week allowance for what seemed forever, to buy a $3.00 Baby Brownie camera.   That camera suffered from mysterious disappearance fairly early on.  However, when I graduated from high school, my mom and dad bought me an Argus Super Seventy-Five, which I used for a number of years.

When I finished school and found my first job, one of the first things I did was buy my very first 35 mm camera - an EXA.  Nearly all pictures taken with the EXA, were slides.

During the early 1980s, I upgraded to a Nikon F3, and it became my companion until we entered the digital camera age.

My progression of digital cameras have all been "point and shoot" caliber.  But recently I began feeling compelled to move on to a good SLR.

From the inception of becoming an ActiveRain member, I have been a constant admirer of Debi Boucher's photography.  I was hesitant to buy new camera equipment before seeking out Debi's advice.  I was torn between Canon and Nikon.  Although I had loved my Nikon F3 35 mm SLR, I hadn't owned a Nikon digital camera.  Both of my last two digital point and shoot digital cameras were Canon - and I had loved them!

But slowly and surely, while admiring Debi's fine work, I would say to myself, "I'll have what she's having!"  A month ago, I took Debi's advice and bought a Nikon D90 SLR with the package containing the 18mm x 105mm lens, plus the 70mm x 300mm lens.

I approached this new camera with a lot of fear and trepidation, but I am finding it easier to love than I had imagined.

This morning, I took another step with Debi's invaluable advice, and purchased on-line, the Nikon 50mm lens, and a Hoya Digital Pro 3x Close Up lens.  Debi takes the most incredible close up photos I have seen on the net.  So again I think, "I'll have what she's having!"

For those of you interested in taking better photos, or would appreciate some really incredible photography, I highly suggest you subscribe to Debi Boucher's blog!

Prepare to be amazed!

Myrl, I know little about the cameras, but I do know that for the past however many months, I so enjoy the moments of beauty and storytelling that your photo posts provide. Thank you.

Debi does take the most amazing photos. I've been following her posts forever now and she never ceases to amaze.

Of course, now that you have the same camera, we expect to see similar results!

Happy shooting Myrl!

Before digital I had invested thousands in fine SLR equipment.  My first digital camera cost me an arm and a leg and held about 12 pictures.  I now need to invest in a full fledged digital SLR, but have been procrastinating, both for budget reasons and figuring they will only get better and cheaper.

Congratulations Myrl. Now I have camera envy! I use a Nikon D40 which is a relatively inexpensive Nikon body, but I have a fantastic lens which cost about $1500 (about 3.5 times more than the body!). Its a Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 AFS. Because it is an f2.8 I don't have to use a flash or tripod in most circumstances. It is a great lens for photographing interiors, even with my very basic camera body.

After reading your blog, I now WANT a new camera!  But I'm holding off buying one because my WANT LIST on the refrigerator must take precidence over this NEW want!  But I'll just add this to the list and SOMEONE might read it and...... buy me the camera!

It's not just the lens that matters.  You can do incredible things with filters and no one should leave home with out a polarizing and/or UV Haze filter.

Nikon professional classes are held all over the country.  With a camera like yours, do yourself a favor and take a lesson from the pros.  You'll be glad you did!

Myrl,

I enjoy photography, but find that most cameras are smarter than I am. I keep trying, and am improving.

Hi Myrl,  Congrats on the new camera.   I went with the Nikon D80 and can't believe how great it is.  For the type of shots we  agents are doing I also bought  Sigma 10-20 wider angle lens and a Nikon strobe !  It completes ( well, are we ever done buying add ons ? ) the system and allows me to take indoor shots for my listings.   Happy 2010 to you !

You guys GO! All this camera smarts is making me feel very childish. Hum, I'll maybe get there some day. I just don't focus like that.

I just made the switch from point and shoot, too.  I went with the Rebel with the additional lens package.  I am so in love with that camera.  My husband joked about me sleeping with it since I loved it so much.  Such the comedian.

At any rate, I'm AMAZED at the difference in photos.  I fully recommend making the switch - the quality is amazing.

Great post!

That almost looks like my camera collection! LOL. We've been collecting cameras as we are getting better and better with the virtual tours and photos and I really like the Canon brand a lot.

Myrl, I love your collection of cameras over the years.  I just bought a new camera, but I'm not real keen on some of the inside shots that I get, so I am in the market for something a bit better, so I can get better quality pictures.  I am going to keep the info in this post as I shop for cameras.  And make a decision as to what to buy.
