the real reason that Medicare is so costly.

I was sitting at my doctor's office yesterday, waiting in the exam room, when he had to excuse himself and take a phone call.

He stepped outside the exam room, but I could still clearly hear the conversation.  All I could hear was one side of the conversation, but you'll get the idea.  Fortunately, he had already taken my blood pressure, or it might have been excessively high.

the gist of the conversation was that my doctor had sent a patient to the hospital, a 90 year old terminal patient, to the hospice care section.  Apparently there were no hospice beds available when she arrived, so they put her in another bed until one opened up.

While she was awaiting her hospice bed... she was visited by an attending physician to determine her course of care (even though my doctor had already sent complete instruction), another doctor was brought in, then a physical therapist (the woman was practically comatose), and a nutritionist (she was not eating... the feeding tube had been removed).

Now that sounds like extraordinary care, until you realize that each time one of these medical professionals had any contact with her, they billed the family.  And of course that means medicare.  My doctor was complaining that none of these visits should have been made, none of them were mandated by hospital procedure, and none of them should be billed.  They were all unnecessary procedures, unnecessary expenses, and none of them benefitted the patient.

My doctor suggested that the hospital had simply identified an opportunity to tag on some additional expenses to a patients medical care, that likely would never be noticed.  And except for the fact that my doctor is an exemplary human being, they would have been right.

That really chaps my hide.  Ohh... maybe I should go to the doctor and have that checked out!?

Sounds like the add ons at a car dealership. I guess the add ons are sometimes useful though and the consumer not the taxpayer pays the tab!

Sounds like your Dr. is a pretty good one and with a lot of common sense, which seems to be in short suply these days. Too bad the hospital ignored his instructions!

Stay well my friend!

Alan, The unnecessary care sounds like being charged for rust proofing when you car was towed in after being totaled in an accident. There is something wrong with the system...and greed is the word.

How many more of these scenarios do we have to witness or hear about before we wake up the fact that we have to get our country back to a moral standard of individual responsibility and accountability. We need to get "mad as hell and not takle it any more". Opps, I just realized I may be a terrorist.

I wonder if each physician had their own "say" in going into that room or if the hospital requested it of each. Calvin great comment - individual moral responsability and being an honest human is what I often look at with today's scenarios. Reminds me of all the RESPA reform going on ... MUCH of it would not have been required if people were indeed honest and morally sound. I guess I am not overly surprised that laws have to be put in place because people can't keep their own laws in their heart.

On a side note, I was at my allergist's office yesterday as well, and WOW did he have a lot to say about the new health care. But that would take up a whole blog!

My husband blew his knee out on New Years Eve, and sad to say I could write a blog on the mismanagement of the healthcare system myself! (Good Idea!) Our doctor couldnt even trouble himself to actually pick up the phone and call the insurance company for the authorization for an MRI he ordered.  Crazy!

Home is where the hearth is.

Gary - but at least with the add-ons, you have the choice of saying "no".

Russell - yeah, my doc is one of the good ones.

Steve - rustproofing indeed.  remember Rusty Jones?

Calvin - easier said than done.

Steve - I think each physician has their own say.

Teresa - that does sound crazy.  I look forward to reading that blog.

Alan:

It took me a long time to find a really good doctor and now I am holding onto him for dear life. My sister is a nurse and she can attest to how unthinking and, simply, uncaring some medical professionals can be - and how costly their uncaring behavior is to everyone who has to pay higher insurance premiums to cover their lapses in judgment.

It's kind of an indictment on the whole system. Sounds to me like the hospital was milking Medicare through the patient who was just a pawn in the game.

By the way. Elvis would have been 75 today and undoubetedly on Medicare had he lived!

Hi Alan-

I understand that they have a cram for that, cure.  Unfortunately, there is no generic of the "chapped hide cream", so you will have to pay $340. from your pharmacy, or order it from Canada!

Home is where the hearth is.

Claudette - one time, when my father-in-law was in the hospital... his regular doctor happened to pass by his room.  He popped his head into the room and said "Max... what're you doing here?", my father in law replied, "I'm in to have an abscess removed from my liver".  His doctor replied, "Well, good luck".  He was billed for that interaction.

Craig - what would you pay to attend 75-year-old Elvis's concert?

Sara - you know... with the amount of chapping, it might be worth the $340.00

Tough one Alan. I'd like to hear some of his 70-74 year concerts first!!!

But I know you'd mortgage the house, sell the kids, throw the dog in on the deal.....

The number one consumer complaint right now are additional fees.I would suggest that you do a localism post for your doctor. honest people need all the support they can get.

I care for my nearly 86 year old Mother- she lives in a private care home but I take her out, to the doctor, etc. Yes, I've seen some of this kind of thing- it's awful, and shameful, and they will keep doing it as long as they can get away with it.

Like Steve said, greed is the word. We don't need health care reform we need morality training.

Let me start by saying I'm Canadian, and . . . not to start a big debate or anything . . . but I've always had a hard time with health care for profit. Somehow, it just seems to test the morality of too many people, and unfortunately, they often come up short.
