The Scenery Around Us

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

When you stop and think electricity hasn't been inside homes all that long, about 100 years. In the beginning wiring was what might best be termed experimental. Safe was not a word anyone would use to describe the first wiring methods in homes. Of course wiring methods progressively became safer to where they are today. But older wiring is still around in many homes and I find it quite frequently during home inspections.

Most often when I find the old stuff it is tucked away in a location not often frequented by anyone in the home. As they say out of sight out of mind. Then along comes Mr. Home Inspector poking into every nook and cranny.

Yet there are times when antiquated wiring is right out in the open. The homeowners literally walk by it every day. At that point it must simply become part of the woodwork. Like driving the same route day after day, you stop paying attention to the scenery. But just like driving a new route, inspecting a home can be similar. The scenery is familiar, walls furniture and the like, but it's not the old familiar territory.

porchTake for example this covered back porch. It has the usual amenities, the old exposed bulb wired somewhat haphazardly and stuff piled against the wall.

"Stuff" is a home inspector's nemesis. Lots of nasty things can hide behind stuff. Sometimes bad things are intentionally hid behind the stuff, but that's another blog.

The stuff here was almost hiding a nasty little electrical problem that had become part of the scenery.  On the right almost covered by a board is an old fuse block.

I tested the exposed conductors and yes it's live. This fixture had become such an accepted part of the every day scenery it had been painted.

fusesMaybe the homeowners thought it was okay because it wasn't in the house or it was in a corner or high up the wall. Whatever the reason it had become part of their everyday scenery. Not much attention was paid to the potential hazard as is clear by the stuff piled all around the fuse block.

We can get complacent with the everyday familiar things around us. Not really paying attention to something that could hurt us or someone else because it has blended into our scenery.

Stop and think. Is there anything in your scenery that might need your attention?

James, I still find live wire wound resisters tucked away in basements. I still find many of the old wiring methodologies fascinating...

There are still some houses in my area that use the old knob and tube system.  It's impossible to get insurance for them.

It's scary what we find in older homes and from the do-it-yourself people that think they know what they are doing and don't.  That is why we have home inspections.

Some of these things can be so dangerous, yet they go unnoticed by homeowners all too often.

Once again you've made it clear why I'm adamant about my buyers having a home inspection.

James, Well, it's not electrical and it happened a loooong time ago but my dad as a kid played a trick by moving the outhouse back a few yards, blending the abandoned opening into the pathway, to catch late night visitors in the dark. I'm sure it got my grandparents' attention.

Does this qualify as a related comment? Have you missed me? Kate

James, don't just love this old stuff---they sure don't make things like they used to:)

Kate, that sounds like "dirty pool" to me:)

James - that looks like the old knob, knob and knob wiring.

You know, if you paint that enough, the paint becomes a latex insulator!

Mr James,

This whole post is way over my head. We will have to discuss it when I come live with you for six months. Nutsy

Mandy, Actually it was almost covered and thanks for the compliment.

Michael, Old wiring methods are interesting to examine. There are still a lot of homes here with old wire.

Malcom, Yes insurance companies for the most part do not want homes with K & T.

Judy, The DIY stuff is much more frightening than old wire.

Craig, It's funny what flies under peoples radar.

Kate, Of course you've been missed! I was actually wondering about you today. Our furry friend is spouting off and needs some grounding :) I like your dads sense of humor. That sounds like a great addition to my Mother in law exit.

Charlie, Thank goodness for that!

Jay, That must be it! They insulated the block with paint.

Nutsy, Being that you are less than one foot tall, everything is over your head.

I really would appreciate it if you would be a bit nicer to my assistant who is going to be going with me to Mexico in only a few days. He has earned his keep.

Nutsy, Try to stay out of trouble this time. The boss is on vacation and I'm sure doesn't want to spend his time bailing you out of a Mexican jail.

South of the border, down Mexico way. Boss jailed his rodent, never to stray.

Mission bells told him that he mustn't stay. South of the border, Boss rode away.

Ay-ay-ay-ay ....

Kate, Love the poem! You are a person of many talents.

Steven, Now name calling is not appropriate. I would hardly think Ms Kate's heart is cold after such a touching example of prose.

Nutsy, The boss most certainly can be eloquent, he however wasn't this time. Of course you wouldn't know eloquent if it bit you in the tail.

Kate, A raw nerve.
