Southern Oregon Film and Television - Letters From the Big Man. The motion picture titled ‘Letters From the Big Man', written and directed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Christopher Munch, wrapped here on the coast on November 2 of this year. Makai Ohana Productions, along with SOFaT (Southern Oregon Film and Television), assisted in the production. Utilizing a cast and crew from Los Angeles, New York City, and Southern Oregon, the production filmed on locations in the Rogue Valley, Illinois Valley, and Chetco drainage east of Brookings. Terri-Lynn Kalhagen of Makai Ohana Productions was hired on the film as the UPM (Unit Production Manager), a key position that entailed communicating with the cast and crew, scouting local talent and locations, finding accommodations, booking flights, scheduling, and working closely with the director. Tony Kalhagen, also of Makai Ohana Productions, was hired to assist Terri-Lynn and organize food to keep the cast and crew fed in different wilderness locations.
The Kalhagens were able to guide and assist the production and actors (many of whom had never been in true wilderness country), bringing much needed authenticity to scenes involving kayaking, backpacking, and survival in the Kalmiopsis and Coastal Range. "Southern Oregon has some of the best locations for motion picture production, with a vast variety of beautiful wilderness locations from the ocean bluffs to the forests and rivers. With the help of SOFaT, we hope to entice more film making to our area in the future," says Terri-Lynn.
Christopher Munch has written and directed such noted Sundance Film Festival favorites as ‘The Sleepy Time Gal', ‘The Hours and Times', ‘Color of a Brisk and Leaping Day', and others. Actors include Lily Rabe, Jason Butler Harner, and Isaac C. Singleton Jr., to name a few. Local actors include Robin Goodrin Nordli from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and Alex Adams from Gold Beach. Camera Assistant Rocky Garrotto and Art Director Ricardo Herrera, both based in the Rogue Valley, were key members of the crew.
The film is currently being edited in Los Angeles and will be released in late 2010 after premiering at one or more major film festivals in North America and Europe. It will also be available on DVD and via digital download.
