Hi everyone,

I am going to a class this friday in New York based on the criteria for LEED certification. From what I remember in the EcoBroker course it is quite extensive. I was glad to see it was mentioned often during the Live Earth event. I heard a very compelling statistic that kids who go to schools that are LEED certified do on average 20% higher on test scores. Anyone have anything to back that up?

Wow Dave - those are interesting statistics - I wonder how they arrived at them myself.

Dave - me again - you made me look!

USGBC In the News
According to this article students show a 25% increase in scores on math and english tests. They attribute this in part to the benefits of natural lighting. Additonally, students show better concentration, moods and behavior.

Leed for Homes is just getting off the ground - currently in pilot stage. It makes me wonder how much greater the improvement would be if the students not only attended school in LEED certified buildings but also LIVED in LEED certified homes. Just think how many less children would be on ritilin and other mood altering/behavior drugs.

Thanks for making me think!

If they have this proof, how can they not make LEED the standard!  I have had a few opportunities to be in a LEED certified building.  Even for the short time I was there-you simply feel different in that atmosphere.

I guess they will make LEED standard when it will be profitable for big business.  It took a while for Lee Iacocca to get his seatbealt accepted into mainstream auto manufacturing also, and now it seems so beyond reason why there ever were cars without them.

Hi Ron,

There are several great sources on what LEED is , Mary Bigelow did a great condensed explanation on her blog here in Active Rain. Take a look at her post or you can go the the US Green Building Council site and they explain it in depth.   http://chapters.usgbc.org/newjersey/

Thanks for asking Ron

Hi Dave,

Actually, I have to give credit to Stephanie Edwards  who did the condensed explanation. I just linked to it (and here again!).

Make sure you also read about GreenWashing  which will show what we can do about corporate greed trying to take over Green! That is the great thing about LEED -- it is by the consumer and for the consumer. LEED for homes is in it's pilot phase at the current time so it is a great time to get on board!

More LEED projects are appearing here in Las Vegas. For some reason, solar energy packages aren't offered through most builders yet. Seems like a no brainer in the desert. -charles

I am an interior designer and attend many national trade shows and educational conferences and have also heard many times that employees who work in a LEED certified building are much more efficient. Plus with all new construction, the occupants have to deal with VOC off-gassing, or "sick building syndrome". LEED buildings use less toxic materials and therefore give the workers a healthier environment to work and concentrate in. I am sure the same is true for students.

I believe our building is in the planning stage of a large renovation , I plan on feeding alot of different options with all the backup data re: productivity and general well being as well as return on investment for a upgraded HVAC and possible PV installation on the roof.
