You can then shop for a home knowing that you are looking at homes you can comfortably afford. Who knows, you may be able to pay less per month that you are paying in rent!

Sure your Realtor can get you access to just about any house on the market but your Realtor is there to make sure the transaction is completed in your best interest. Your agent will negotiate the contract for you, saving you the agony of dealing directly with the seller (who of course is looking out for their best interest). The Realtor will be one of your most trusted friends by the time you close on your house...let them sweat it out!
Tears...oh the joy that comes with home ownership! At the closing on your new home you may cry over your hand hurting due to the thousands (ok maybe not thousands) of papers that you must sign. You may think to yourself, I already know my name why do I need to practice my handwriting? Soon after the signing your tears of joy will stream as you realize you now have a place to call your own.
