HummingbirdMy owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in San Diego. If you get a chance, watch the Nature program Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air on PBS this month.

I had the opportunity to watch it late last night, and it is absolutely amazing to watch these little birds fly in slow motion.

Something I never knew was that hummingbirds also have to eat, something more than just flower nectar. They actually eat insects to get their protein, and one of the researchers has slow-motion video of how hummingbirds, with their long beaks, hunt insects. Quite fascinating.

A few interesting things I learned:

  1. HummingbirdOne species of hummingbird likes to make its nest near the nests of Cooper's hawks. Seems that the wildlife that likes to feed on hummingbird eggs is the same wildlife that the hawks like to eat, and even though hawks like to eat birds, the hummingbird apparently is too fast and too small for the hawks.
  2. One species has a beak that is about four inches long, which is longer than its body.
  3. One species has male and female with different sized beaks which allow them to feed on different types of flowers.
  4. Hummingbirds live up to twelve years.
  5. Due to global warming, hummingbirds that used to winter in Mexico are now being found along the Gulf Coast and east coast during the winter.

Thanks Jim. I'll set the DVR as soon as I can. Humming birds are amazing; we used to see a lot of them at a beach house my parents had.

Hi Jim-

We love to spot the Hummers in our garden.  They are so beautiful and relaxing to watch and yes, a little exciting. I know just how Zooey must feel about them - aside from the snack potential!

I'll watch for the show. We have many species here, they love it when I garden. We have some so small they look like moths until one looks closely.

Hi Jim,

I'm sorry that I missed the show on PBS.  Hopefully they will air it again.  Hummingbirds are fascinating!  We have ruby throated hummers in our area - I enjoy them coming to our feeders & garden when they are here.  I love those tiny creatures!  Thank you for your post!

Jim..Hummingbirds are extremely interesting to watch.  We have feeders hanging on our deck so we can enjoy the beautiful little creatures. Their ability to hover in place is amazing.

Hey, everyone.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

I'm still fighting to get an escrow closed that was supposed to close last week. As soon as I get everyone to jump through all these hoops, I hope to get back to being more regular here at ActiveRain rather than waiting until the weekend to do all my posts and reciprocal comments.

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
