My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in San Diego. One of the History Channel's Mega Disaster shows is about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

1906 San Francisco earthquakeThe earthquake struck on Wednesday, April 18, at 5:12 a.m., and was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada. It has been estimated that the earthquake was anywhere from 7.7 to 8.25 on the Moment Magnitude Scale, the successor to the Richter Scale which was developed in 1935.

A little bit of real estate trivia from the show tells us that after the earthquake, the San Francisco Real Estate Board voted that, in all real estate matters, what had been known as "The Great Earthquake" would now be called "The Great Fire."

Do you know why? The answer is in the show, but leave a comment with your guess if you haven't seen the show.

Jim - I saw the show and was interested in how history was rewritten to minimize the effects of the "Great Earthquake." Guess I wouldn't want to live or invest there either if I was aware of the scope of the disaster.

Hi Jim ~ That never clicked with me - that the Great Fire was really a big quake.  AR comes through again!

Jim..I didn't see the program so don't know the answer.  Guess I had better keep my eye on the tv schedule so I can catch it next time it airs.

Jim, I have not seen the show, but I would imagine that fires erupted and most buildings were made of wood, all close together and the fires just consumed the city.  And the fire departments were unable to maneuver around the streets because of the damage from the earthquake, if they were even functioning at all.  Thanks for the trivia.    ----Gloria

Hey, everyone.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

The answer to why they called it "The Great Fire" instead of "The Great Earthquake" is because one can prevent fires. One cannot prevent earthquakes. It's easier, then, to sell real estate in an area where a fire occurred rather than one where an earthquake occurrred.

I'm still fighting to get an escrow closed that was supposed to close last week. As soon as I get everyone to jump through all these hoops, I hope to get back to being more regular here at ActiveRain rather than waiting until the weekend to do all my posts and reciprocal comments.

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
