Overton Square

As I have written before, when I was in college and later years my friends and I would hang out at a great place called Overton Square.  The Square, as we called it, had so many interesting little shops, restaurants, etc.  In fact I had my first French meal at a great restaurant called Paulette's (which also had the BEST soup you would ever want).  Just off the square, diagonally was a great hotel (I never stayed there but they had great lunches we enjoyed when I was in college).  Barry Manilow, before he was a major star, sang at a bar/restaurant in the Square.  He was good even then!

The Square in the past few years has fallen into disrepair and it has been sold to a developer.  The developer has in recent weeks been talking about razing the unique buildings.  The buildings that comprise the square are different and unique from anything that you would ever see.  The Memphis City Council is considering an Ordinance that would preserve the square.  This is good news, especially for the Midtown area.

Overton Square has always been about the people of Memphis.  Beale Street, while nice and wonderful, is about tourists.  Overton Square is where friends gathered for years to celebrate together, cry together, and party together.

I hope and pray that we get another entertainment district back on that small patch of land right there are Cooper and Madison.
