I have to admit that I am really enjoying this "Today in History" blog. I'm learning a lot and I'm providing entertainment for all of you and maybe a trip down memory lane. What more could you ask for?
So, what happened in history this day, January 12th? The suspense is killing you isn't it? Well, I have to admit that January 12th didn't seem that exciting to me, unless it's your birthday or something (happy birthday if it's your birthday). Here is some of what I found:
- 1932: The first female was elected to the U.S. Senate, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas.
- 1984- Restorers of the Great Pyramids adopt a new system that interlocks blocks that was practiced by the original pyramid builders. The process went very smoothly from there.
- 1966: Johnson says U.S. should stay in Vietnam in his State of the Union Address.
- 1969: Joe Namath leads the NY Jets to a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, held in Miami, FL.
- 1876: Jack London is born. He was wrote 50 fiction and non-fiction books.
- 1900: The Detroit Automobile Company finishes it's first commercial vehicle, a delivery wagon. Henry Ford who designed the wagon soon quit and started his own company.
- 1904: Barney Oldfield, racing driver goes 91.37mph across the frozen surface of Lake St. Clair (part of the Great Lakes system).
- 1926: "Sam and Henry" (Amos and Andy) debuts on Chicago's WGN radio station.
- 1943: Soviet troops breach the German Siege of Lenningrad.
- 1919: Leaders of Britain, France, Itally and the United States meet in Paris for a peace conference.
- 1888: "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" kills 235 people, mainly children on their way home from school across the Northwest Plains of the U.S.
So when you think of hearing the stories of your parents and their parents and so on and so on walking home from school, you might want to tell them how lucky they are that they weren't part of the "Schoolchildren's Bizzard" in 1888. This particular disaster makes me wonder how many people that are still living would remember the story or had it told to them by a friend or family member.
So I hope this stirs up some memories for you or maybe gets you to thinking about others that may have been impacted by these events.
