12

I have to admit that I am really enjoying this "Today in History" blog. I'm learning a lot and I'm providing entertainment for all of you and maybe a trip down memory lane. What more could you ask for?

So, what happened in history this day, January 12th? The suspense is killing you isn't it? Well, I have to admit that January 12th didn't seem that exciting to me, unless it's your birthday or something (happy birthday if it's your birthday). Here is some of what I found:

  • 1932: The first female was elected to the U.S. Senate, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas.
  • 1984- Restorers of the Great Pyramids adopt a new system that interlocks Pyramidsblocks that was practiced by the original pyramid builders. The process went very smoothly from there.
  • 1966: Johnson says U.S. should stay in Vietnam in his State of the Union Address.
  • 1969: Joe Namath leads the NY Jets to a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, held in Miami, FL.
  • 1876: Jack London is born. He was wrote 50 fiction and non-fiction books.

    1969 Super Bowl

  • 1900: The Detroit Automobile Company finishes it's first commercial vehicle, a delivery wagon. Henry Ford who designed the wagon soon quit and started his own company.
  • 1904: Barney Oldfield, racing driver goes 91.37mph across the frozen surface of Lake St. Clair (part of the Great Lakes system).
  • 1926: "Sam and Henry" (Amos and Andy) debuts on Chicago's WGN radio station.
  • 1943: Soviet troops breach the German Siege of Lenningrad.
  • 1919: Leaders of Britain, France, Itally and the United States meet in Paris for a peace conference.
  • 1888: "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" kills 235 people, mainly children on their way home from school across the Northwest Plains of the U.S.

So when you think of hearing the stories of your parents and their parents and so on and so on walking home from school, you might want to tell them how lucky they are that they weren't part of the "Schoolchildren's Bizzard" in 1888. This particular disaster makes me wonder how many people that are still living would remember the story or had it told to them by a friend or family member.

So I hope this stirs up some memories for you or maybe gets you to thinking about others that may have been impacted by these events.

Josee (how do I find the accent mark?), I'm particularly drawn to item number one; First female elected to U.S. Senate. She was already breaking the "glass ceiling." And I love that she shares the same name as my grandmother and they both lived for a time in Arkansas. This is a terrific post series you have going. Thanks for the tidbits.

Very interesting.  I had never heard of the blizzard of 1888.  Wow children getting killed in a blizzard on their way home from school.  We take our modern conveniences for granted.

Thanks for all of the comments, this is really a fun blog.

Joan-Glad it caught your eye, do you have an Arkansas connection?

Sherry-Don't worry about the accent, it's actually added from the symbols tab in word, but you can always just cut and paste my name if you really want to get it correct.  Thanks for asking.  I'm glad you found something in the blog that triggered memories etc...

Marchel-Can you believe that blizzard?  We do have it good.

Barb-Thanks for checking it out, glad you like the info.

Matt-The good the bad and the ugly, that's what history holds in it's hands.

Don- Glad you like the information.

Gary-Glad you liked it. it is interesting and comments like your's and others is part of why I enjoy it.

Darren-Yes, I remember those too.  He was really a good looking dude.   Wonder what he's up too now?
