The country of Haiti has been devastated by the worst earthquake earthquake in Haitito hit the area since the 17th century, and the capital city of Port au Prince, with a populatin of 2 million, has been flattened.  It is estimated that there may be hundreds of thousands of casualties.  United Nations officials said hours after the 7.0 quake hit at 4:53 pm that they still couldn't account for a large number of U.N. personnel.  The photos and videos I've seen of the damage have been horrible, and they will be needing any kind of aid and assistance that anyone can offer.

I pulled the following list of organizations that will be helping ,in case you would like to make a donation.  Probably the easiest and most immediate way to help is to text the word "Haiti" to "90999".  If you do this, $10 will be immediately donated to the Red Cross, and the $10 wil be charged to your cell phone bill.

The United States State Department Operations Center on Tuesday opened a number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti. Due to heavy volume, some callers may receive a recording. "Our embassy is still in the early stages of contacting American citizens through our Warden Network," the U.S. State Department said in a statement. "Communications are very difficult within Haiti at this time."

The number for Americans who are looking for information about family members in Haiti is 1-888-407-4747.

Thanks for your timely list of relief organizations.  This looks to be one of the most devestating earthquakes in recent memory and much help will be required in the coming weeks and months.

I work with a local builder McGuinn Homes and he has full time mission in Haiti. I have called him to see how I can lend a hand.

Great list, Susan.  Another great organization that we support that is also helping in the relief efforts is Compassion International (http://www.compassion.com/)

Thank you.

Another way to make a donation is through www.compassion.com.  Compassion International has been helping in Haiti long before the quake occurred.  Throughout the world they have now reached a sponsorship of over 1,000,000 children.

Thank you for your comments, and for the additional way to help, Randy.  This may be the biggest disaster of recent times, and in such a poor country with poor construction standards, that the damage is horrendous and many families who didn't have much to begin with now have nothing.

This is a wonderful list you have put together Susan. We have an agent in our office from Haiti and she had been to visit her Mother, who she brought back to Columbia 2 days before the Quake.

We sent our donations out yesterday. I thought it was amazing when I heard that texting has raised something like $6 million. Finally, I see a use for texting.

Thank you Susan...and now  we have a bi-partisan effort with the Clinton-Bush fund raising effort....together we can all make a difference.

My donations went out within hours of the earthquake. Estimated 100,000 dead. Imagine if that were in San Francisco or Los Angeles. It would be on television 24 hours a day, just like Katrina.
