SAN MATEO PARK-AN HISTORIC, UPSCALE COMMUNITY ON THE SAN FRANCISCO PENINSULA

San Mateo Park, one of San Francisco Peninsula’s most beautiful, quality communities is adjacent to the towns of Burlingame to the north and Hillsborough to the west and south.

The neighborhood ambiance and lush gardens throughout the development were the collaborative effort of George Howard, Jr., a noted local architect, and John McLaren. McLaren is famous for his design of Golden Gate Park.

Together, Howard and McLaren laid out gently winding streets, conforming them to the rolling terrain of San Mateo Park. They crafted  69 meticulously landscaped  circles, medians and crescents  to adorn this upscale neighborhood.

Howard formed strict deed restrictions, to assure that every home built in San Mateo Park would be of quality, both in construction and design. San Mateo Park is the home of an assortment of architecture styles:  Queen Annes, Mission Revivals, Craftsman Bungalows, English Tudors, Colonials and Mediterraneans.

A number of landmark properties designed by noted architects Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, and, of course, George Howard, Jr. grace the tree-lined streets. Over the years, many of these landmark homes have been lovingly restored.

Today, "The Park," as it is affectionally called, is one of the most exclusive addresses in the San Francisco Bay Area close to 5 star restaurants, upscale shopping and fabulous schools.

San Mateo Park boasts of an excellent elementary school, the San Mateo Park Math and Science Magnet School, which has received funds from the Federal government to: increase test scores, develop a diversity-sensitive community, and develop and implement a program with unique and specialized curriculum.

Close to downtown San Mateo, Park residences can dine at five-star, award wining Voigner Restaurant  which provides plush booths, a stunning display of homemade charcuterie, a cozy fireplace, and a blazing wood-fired brick oven. Known for it’s wine and menu pairings, Voigner won Wine Spectator’s 2008 Award of Excellence.

Voigner is housed atop San Mateo’s “Best of Choice” award-winning upscale market, Draeger’s  which features the largest selection of specialty foods and produce, as well as a renowned wine department.

However, it is the neighborhood feeling of well-maintained homes, and landscaped gardens along with the exuberance of its architecture and landscaping, that lends unique character and makes San Mateo Park so desirable.

Great post, Mary Ann.  I love the "Park". It's my favorite neighborhood on the Pennisula. My wife and I are thinking of moving there as a matter of fact.

Well written. Good job.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the comment.  It is my first post, so your feedback means a lot to me.  By the way, is Brendon still on your team helping?  If so, do you think he might be open to an occasional question about posting?  Thanks!

Mary Ann
