An acre is defined by 43,560 square feet. That’s one of those things you pick up in Realtor school if you didn’t know it. (and why would you, really?) It’s also about 4,840 square yards.  This is what it looks like in Football Field terms since so many people understand and speak that language.

For bigger parcels, my measuring stick is the deaf school topiary park in downtown Columbus.  It’s 10 acres and I have a solid feel for what that means.  My house lot, in Olde Towne East, is about 50 X 175 Square Feet or 8,750 square feet.  Divide that by the number of square feet in an acre and my city lot is about .2 Acres.  Not a bad slice of the urban pie. 

Some parts of town, even some streets in certain neighborhoods, have bigger lots than others.  There are currently 61 Active Listings in the City of Columbus with at least 1 acre of land.  Most of those are fringe Columbus — some bunched around that Karl/Maize/Cook Rd area, some up and down the Scioto toward Dublin, Some others bunched around Columbus Country Club.  This year I sold a home with a .25 Acre lot that felt really big.  If you can find a quarter acre in the city of Columbus, it’s luxurious.  Picture courtesy of Gnu Liscense.
