New Movies and Other Events in Iowa City & Coralville This Weekend

The weekend is upon us again. Time for my round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for January 15 through January 17.

First, let's look at new movie releases. Two new movies to share with you this week. The first is The Book of Eli, with the movie-drawing magnet Denzel Washington. Will he topple Avatar from the top spot? I'm not sure, but I doubt it. A wastelands movie with Denzel up against top notch fantasy fiction... I'd say we have a face-off this weekend. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Whatever happens with those two movies is irrelevant to the success of the other movie out this weekend - A movie definitely for kids. The Spy Next Door is an adventure movie with Jackie Chan. It doesn't get very good reviews, but it's not like they've never been wrong!

You can catch these movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Cinema in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Theatre in Iowa City.

Moving onto the regular theatre... If you feel like laughing, then the Englert is the place to be on Saturday. They have a performance of the musical comedy Church Basement Ladies to lighten up your weekend.

Another great weekend at The Mill of course. Tonight you can experience an evening with Jookabox - who according to info on the website is "eccentric and awesome." Hard to resist, don't you think?

On Saturday it's a night of bluegrass with Andy Carlson and Casey Cook. Both stellar musicians of the highest caliber. Andy has loads of accolades. To top it off, the New York Times called him the "demon fiddler." Casey is the youngest musician ever to be inducted into the Florida Country Music Hall of Fame.

If you like your country music with dance then check out the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great food, great music and free wi-fi...They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays...They're on Facebook and you'll find a list of their specials there.

And to wrap it up for this week,
Riverside Casino is another very popular local venue. You may be drawn by the casino, but they have plenty of live entertainment too. You'll find a calender of events on their website too.

Iowa City is a busy little town and Coralville has The Mall, the Ice Rink and Children's Museum, just for starters. My post is just a snapshot of a few of the highlights this weekend. Another good source for what's going on in the Iowa City area is the Press Citizen.

Denise,

The Book of Eli must be a great movie ... it has Denzel Washington. Your rundown of weekend activities is sure to be appreciated by your area folks. Great reading.

Hi Linda ~ I know - Denzel...Who cares what the movie's about if he's in it!:-)

Avatar is having a great run though. My son has seen it in 2D and missed out seeing it in 3D last weekend - After 3 weeks in the theaters it was still sold out for the evening showing! Now the question becomes, what will my son do this weekend? Denzel or Avatar in 3D? Guess I should have asked him before writing this post!

Nice to see you. Hope 2010 is starting out well for you.

I've now seen both Avatar and The book of Eli. Avatar may very well be the best movie I've ever seen! But I did also enjoy Denzel's new release. It definitely got better as it went along.

Enjoy!

BTW, nice photo, too.

Hi Deena ~ I didn't figure Denzel would knock Avatar off the top spot. I haven't spoken to anyone yet who wasn't impressed with that movie! Good to know you liked The Book of Eli - I'm glad Denzel at least gave Avatar a run for their money!

Thanks for the compliment on the photo too. We often have deer in our back yard and of course we love seeing them there. It brightens up the winter landscape.
