Purple Firework PhotoSo there is a party going on here at Active Rain. And nothing's going to break it up.  Don't mind me, I'm here to enjoy the music! But which way are we heading here on ActiveRain?

Everyone is on their soap box, "ACTIVERAIN is supposed to be for PROFESSIONALS" "We need better content!", "We should be THE source for information regarding Real Estate."  I stated these things myself in my Localism Week in Review. I can think of 12 different blogs that have addressed the same thing over the past two weeks myself.

The Carnival of Content has started, with a Big Bucket O' Points for the winners.  People are (I think) working hard researching, trying to come up with original ideas and pictures, trying SO hard not to say the same thing 400 other Realtors are going to say.  "Don't overprice, stage your home"  Will this be good for consumers?  It will if people participate.  Will we all read the wonderful articles that will come out of this?  I doubt it.

We are real estate professionals.  We all get up in the morning and work on helping our clients. We attend training meetings, office meetings, conference calls. We read our professionals magazines, newsletters, e-mails, blogs, we are bombarded with information about how to improve ourselves for the sake of our business. We work very hard in our business world, but when we all have a little extra time on our hands, do we come into ActiveRain to be "educated" again?  Or do we come in here to kick back, relax a little, and enjoy the company of those who can empathize with us?

My theory? We're here to socialize.  Like the happy hour at work after the day was done, we now all congregate around the computer after our "work" is done and muse over the day. Life is too busy and complicated to go hang out at the local pub.  Besides that, If all of the National Association of Realtors showed up at a place like Cheers one day, there would always be those who would try and bring pictures of their clients properties.

I took my theory and tried to put it to the test.  Look at those posts who are well thought out, very educational, informative, and of great relevance.  They are skimmed over perhaps, and a few get comments. I even saw some that got 40 or 50 when they are featured.

But go back to the ones that are fun, or about current events. The posts on the iPhone? Pretty high up there.  Posts about Active Rain, or the points system? Another biggie.  Over 150 comments are common on those posts that celebrate, make us laugh, or are controversial. A well thought post about mortgage rates or current market trends?  Eh, unless someone has a unique individual idea, it's pretty much passed over.

And those who always get a lot of comments on their posts?  Those who love to PAR-TAY!  Even Broker Bryant and TLW liven up their boring posts with funny pictures of themselves.  We look forward to their posts just to see what funny picture he's going to add in :)

So what are we going to do about it? I suggest NOTHING!  Let's stop complaining about how there isn't enough professionalism in here. Enjoy the atmosphere, but realize we DO have a lot of professional posts on here. And when someone needs an answer, they will search through the history, and find the answer they are looking for.  We're professionals.  We will share our knowledge in blogs, it's our nature as Real Estate Professionals.  WE HAVE BIG MOUTHS :) But don't hate the fact that we all need a place to come and relax, vent, or enjoy ourselves too.

If you made it this far, congratulations :) I'm off to write a "serious" blog for the Carnival of Content, and then to relax and enjoy the rest of the night ;)  Take care, and Happy Blogging everyone.

P.S. I want to make special mention of Jason's Localism Contest "My (My Family's) favorite place to hang out is __________" This one is a little more fun, and the deadline has a little more time.  I am really looking foward to these entries!

Well I like the enjoyment of both worlds.  Although I don't put the pressure on myself that I did a few months back.  I love the socialization I find here as well as the great info.

Lexa, nicely put.  I try to create posts of interests as that's what I felt should be offered on Active Rain.  However, I have posted a article or two for fun.  What I think should be given a greater degree of effort is in length of content.  I have seen many posts lately where only one or two sentences are posted and don't really offer any provoking thought.  I just don't respond to those.  We all do need to be appreciated and sometimes it's just needed to have someone else to talk to.  So great article and food for thought!

David Same here.  50 words or 1,000, you still get 200 points.  But you do get more points for those featured and commented and rated on.  So in the end you do get more for the better posts.  But it's frustrating to try and write out a post with lots of information and then get no response. There are some people getting leads from their ActiveRain Blogs, but mostly it is because they post it also somewhere else.

Jennifer I haven't yet, honestly.  I need to buckle down and write some real posts.  But I am an attention getter :) I like things that get response

Cythia  We need both worlds.  It would be so dull around here if it is only about business

Lexa,

I am from the beginning days of AR.  There was much focus on educating each other as well as the consumer.  As the population of members increased, the site became more and more social in nature which is not what AR was originally created for.

Yes, you can make posts fun and entertaining to help get a point across as many do.  Those here for the pure social aspect will find that they are actually hurting themselves when the consumer comes looking.  I only blog on AR and link them to several other sites.  So far this week, I have gotten 2 clients from my blogs here on AR.  And yes, I have done some social, but most are informative.  The social posts are to show that I have a human side. :)

In regards to professional/on-topic posts through contests/carnivals, I am also running an AR sanctioned contest that has not received a lot of participation even with large points being offered to the winners.  Many people said that they would enter, but so far very few have.  I encourage you to check it out and submit your own entry.  The contest is geared more for quality Localism posts.  Here is a link if you are interested.

Hi Lexa - Thank you for the heads up on the Carnival - I am looking into it.  You summed up all the great things about Active Rain.  It is here and fits whatever mood you are in.  Meet you at Cheers - we went to it regularly when we lived on Beacon Hill before it was a tv show. smile!

It's all about the quality of relationships we have with others that make us a good person/professional...I love all of it...and I want the consumer to see the person under the professional "title"...woohoo! that's me! Good one Lexa....

P.S. Just submitted that all day post for Carnival. I look at it this way....I am currently working with a client who found me on the internet (AR blog) and she said she loved all the nice comments people gave me for my post. I keep meaning to ask which one...I don't do stats and stuff...must of been an "about Hawaii" thing.

Hi Lexa, I did an analysis of which of my blogs went over best.  Top 2 topics were Active Rain and tips on real estate realted.  LOW were any localism topics.  I like the fun stuff too.  I think AR might do well if they added to the "for professionals" and "for consumers" two more posting main categories "about Active Rain" and "just for fun", the search would be much easier and people wouldn't have to keep posting in groups they don't belong in.

See Janie :) The posts I have written thinking that it would really be of value, or use and I took a LONG time writing, I got almost no response.  I write something off the top of my head or an idea, like the ActiveRain Points post, and it is featured for the Week in Review :)  I still think we need more posts for consumers and such, but people just really like being here and making friends!

Yep... July 31st is the deadline.  I did it because I know a lot of people take summer vacation.  This way they could use their vacation spot as the family's favorite hang out.  I look forward to your entry.  And thanks for mentioning the contest in the post.

Lexa...

I am with you on this. We need balance. I personally can't write about real estate. Blog Boy and I are really one person. What happens to him happens to me. I love the social side of AR as many other's do. I do not believe for one minute that being social is hurting us or our reputation. That remark makes me want to ROAR. Oh. Wait. I just did :)

Blog Boy and I have not hurt our reputation by being ourselves and allowing the consumer's to know who we are. The consumer wants to do business with real people...Not a suit. I honestly wish people would stop telling other's that they are hurting themselves by being human. Who's to say what effects my market and the consumers in my market? Someone that knows nothing about my market should not be telling me or anyone else what professional is or is not. Gee. You think that whole thing whole thing pissed me off or what? :)

Good thing Blog Boy and I do our own contests. LOL.

TLW...ROAR!

I know one of these days we are going to go to an Active Rain function and see you across the crowd and actually scream Hey, TLW and Blog Boy! It's me!  We might even find out you have real names one day :)

I really thought I would catch  H E double hockey sticks for some of the posts, my thoughts and ideas, and opening my yap before I always think everything through. But either people are REALLY nice, or they actually like me for being real on here.   Thanks for "backing" me up on this one.  You are a gem to this community :)
