We just put up a new feature on the network to try and solve some of the clutter in the blogging section.  We added 3 blog groups:

1. Group blog for real estate professionals (Read posting guidelines...)

2. Group blog for consumers (Read posting guidelines...)

3. Regional news and information (Read posting guidelines...

When making blog posts you now may choose to have your entry show up in one or more of these groups.  When you are viewing blog entries you may now choose to view only entries that fall into one of these groups.  So if you only want to view entries targetted at real estate professionals this makes it very easy to do.  There is still the option to view all posts sitewide regardless of the group it falls into.

Because there has been over 1,000 blog posts previously made on this site we did not go back and catagorize previous posts, but feel free to add your previous posts to the appropriate category.

Give it a try and let us no what you think...

Will consumers be able to see all blog posts or only members? How will that work?

Unless you specifically set the post to be "Members Only" anyone visiting the site will be able to see it regardless of the catagory.  We're trying to create a simply way for people to filter posts a little better.

You should also post some comment guidelines. The comment spam is getting ridiculous.  Commenting for points sake needs to be addressed in my opinion.

Jacqulyn, I'll give it some thought tonight, and we'll try to come up with a good solution to preventing the comment spam.  May mean turning off the points for writting comments.

This is a great new feature.  Thanks for adding it.

Taking away the points for responding will definitely slow down responses to all of the blogs.  Maybe that is a good thing; I just don't know.

"we'll try to come up with a good solution to preventing the comment spam"

So, I'm hijacking the post, but....how about awarding points on # of words similar to the blog.  I assume longer worded comments are more substantive and are adding to the conversation.  It'll do away with awarding points for the "That was interesting" & "Great post"  type comments.  People may probably still fluff the comments for the points, but hopefully, it will reduce some of the comment spam.

I like that we can target our posts to different audiences.  Sometimes there are things that we can help each other with as we figure out effective blogging.

Once again you have identified a need and responded to the challenge. Thank you!  I think that eliminating the points for comments is a good thing. There are a few topics that really interest me so I turn on the "notify me" option only to have my inbox filled with comments like "I agree", "Great point", etc. when I am looking for positive info that will enhance my business, character, personal growth and life in general. Also am very excited about the forum addition. Consider me as one of your biggest fans, guys, and keep up the good work!

(So... I get points just for "praising" you? Cool. That works with my wife too. LOL)

"but feel free to add your previous posts to the appropriate category"  I hope a lot of members don't take this to mean repost a previous post!

I hope we don't lose our points for commenting. I comment a lot but do try to add something to the conversation. There should be away to limit the "great post" comment but relevent additions should still be counted. Funny how we are all adults here(in theory) but are not able to use this site as a source of gathering information and exchanging ideas and opinions without creating controversy by point spamming. I went to Starbucks yesterday and they would not even give me a cup of coffee for my points! Very upsetting. I guess they don't understand true currency!

Hi Matt,

Another comment on losing points for comments. To me comments is the true test as to whether or not the post is interesting. And if the points are eliminated what's going to happen? More irrelevent blogs to make up the difference. Instead of commenting on a post they will just start a new one. Maybe the new forum board will help with this. I can see that all the redundant, "copy and paste" and the ones I have noticed lately are the same subject split into 3 post one after another by the same poster(Hey they get 600 instead of 200) are going to be a real issue as fast as this site is growing. However I would imagine this is a good problem to have. You could be trying to figure out how to get members and posts!! Are there rules on blog etiquette on this site? Maybe there should be a minimum standard as to what qualifies as a blog post on ActiveRain. Of course they would then have to be monitored which would open up a whole other "can of worms". Matt I don't have a solution for this but will be pondering it over the next few days. I will let you know if I get a flash of wisdom.

The Blog Posting Guidlelines are GREAT.  They should pop up and have to be acknowledged each time a member hits the create blog entry button.  Maybe a few more people would read and abide by them them!

The posting guidelines are a GREAT addition. The problem of course, is getting people to read them, and follow them.

How about a button to flag something non-compliant? I'm not saying we should all turn into the posting police, but there needs to be some way to identify blogs that don't follow the simplest of rules.

For example, I just saw a blog post that was in effect, a listing. It was well done, but if that isn't blatant advertising I don't know what is. I don't want to see the AR blog polluted with listings, or other ads, or regurgitated news stories (though I like news stories WITH members comments!)

Maybe some sort of "flagging" system ala CraigsList would work?

Giving members the ability to flag and report abuse of the system might work as a deterrent.  I think for it to be effective there must be some kind of enforcement mechanism, such as  the potential to lose points for violations of the posting guidelines.  Only problem is all the monitoring (even for only the flagged posts and comments) could turn out to be an enormous job.  Don't want to overwhelm Matt and company with the "solution".

Many thanks to the AR team for all their work and thought on this site.
