Teenagers - self worth is somthing that I was thinking about today as I was going into the office -- teenagers being able to find themselves -- to know who they truly are. How do they go about doing that?
Some teenagers seem to know who they are, what their place is and are at peace with themselves. Others seems to always be looking for approval from their parents and/or their peers.
What am I talking about here? Is it called self worth? Is is called self-esteem? When you read the definition of self-esteem in the Wikipedia, one doesn't come away with a true feeling of what self-esteem really is. Try it yourself. It talks about how self-esteem affects grades in school -- it says that sometimes, high self-esteem can mean low grades and sometimes, it can mean high grades. Of course, there is a lot more to the definition of self-esteem in the Wikipedia.
This brought me to thinking about why this is --is it genetic? is it the environment? I really don't think that it is environment since 2 children in the same family can be completely different -- one can be so much more needy than another. But, then maybe that would rule out genetics, too.
Then, my thought process went to adults -- then, to myself. Then, I realized that I struggled for years as an adult before I figured out who I was -- who the real me is.
I am not a psychologist, nor a psychiatrist -- so, I have no idea why it took me so long to feel that I am who I am --I like who I am -- I don't have to answer to anyone about who I am -- if they don't like who I am, then I consider that their problem, not mine.
OK, I still have not answered my original question -- why do some teenagers feel they can conquer the world and others feel that the world is against them?
