An interesting and motley crew of famous people were born on this date. Happy birthday to them, and to you if you were born on this date!

  1. Benjamin Franklin - 1706, Boston, Massachusetts - Founding Father, inventor, scientists, politician, diplomat, and much more.
  2. Alva Belmont - 1853, Mobile, Alabama - Prominent figure in the women's suffrage movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. You might know Alva from her two most famous quotations:
"Just pray to God. She will help you."
"First marry for money, then marry for love."
  3. Al Capone - 1899, Brooklyn, New York - Prominent American gangster in the era of prohibition. Interestingly, his was sent to prison for income tax evasion. Don't mess with the IRS!

  5. James Earl Jones - 1931, Arkabutla, Mississippi - The voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films, which I didn't know until an episode of Will & Grace when James Earl Jones told Jack, "I don't need this crap. I have Darth Vader money."
  6. Douglas Wilder - 1931, Richmond, Virginia - First African-American to be elected Governor of a State (Virginia, 1990-1994) and the second to serve as Governor (P.B.S. Pinchback, Louisiana, 1872, who succeeded to office when the Governor died).
  7. Muhamman Ali - 1942, Louisville, Kentucky - three-time world boxing champion.
  8. Andy Kaufman - 1949, New York, New York - Actor. Who can forget Andy as Latka Gravas on Taxi?
  9. Jim Carrey - 1962, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada - Actor best known for Liar Liar and the Ace Ventura movies.

This is an interesting list of people sharing this birthday.  I am going to reblog this because I think it's a neat piece of trivia.  Thanks for compiling this.

Andy Kaufman.  What a character.  Remember when he was trying to be professional wrestler.  Publicity stunt, or truly a mad man??? who knows.  He was great in Taxi.  Stole the show just like Kramer in Sienfield  RIP

Hello Russel and what a great post! Some great people and some wonderful information.

Believe it or not, I went out on a blind date one time many moons ago and the girl was the daughter of Al Capone. She was very unattractive to say the least and her Grandmother always mentioned to her to speak to no one about it, I wonder why?

Hey, Malcom - Imagine sharing your birthday with both Benjamin Franklin and Al Capone!

Hey, Stacey-Ann - This was one of the more interesting collection of personalities all born on the same day.  Here's the signup for daily emails: http://preferences.aetv.com/default.aspx?brand=bio

Hey, Carole - I think James Earl Ray killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but James Earl Jones was the voice of Darth Vader.

Hey, Gary - And a motley crew it was, too!

Hey, Gene - My favorites are Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

Hey, Marilyn - Only those who are still living will. LOL

Hey, Susan - I wonder if our First Lady knows she shares a birthday with Al Capone. LOL

Hey, Jim - I wasn't a fan of Taxi until many years later. Ditto with Seinfeld.

Hey, Lisa - And some birthday cakes with a serious number of candles on them!

Hey, VB - Must have been one of his out-of-wedlock children.

Hey , Guy - Thanks for your kind words, and for stopping by.

Hey, Carra - I just thought about it, but I've never explored who I share a birthday with.

Hey, Olga - Thanks for stopping by.
