MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA HOME HEATING FIREPLACE ALTERNATIVES.

FIREPLACE FUELS, GAS, PROPANE OR WOOD?  DEPENDS ON THE LOCATION, BUILDER AND PERSONAL PREFERENCE.  In most homes the fireplace is either decorative or a secondary source of heat.  Of course, there are many rural homes, small homes whereby the only heat source is the fireplace.

Maryland and Northern Virginia are areas with "moderate" weather.  Our normal daytime high temperature is usually about 43 F.  This year, however, we've been lucky to get to 30 F during the daytime.  Night time lows have been around 15 F.  For us, that's cold.  Moderate winter temperatures mean that the fireplace can often be used as the only source of heat if folks are gathering "around the fireplace".  The ambiance is friendly and warm.

One result of the unusual cold this year has been more home buyer interest in the heating systems available in homes of interest.

"Is it gas heat?"  buyers ask.  Or, "We MUST have gas heat".   Of course, they usually mean municipal gas lines for natural gas.  However, if the home buyer insists on gas heat, if they buy in rural areas, they will have the option of Propane, Oil, Electric, or Heat Pump.  However, once folks get consider rural areas and want to buy a home with acreage, it's going to be rare for the municipally supplied "gas" to be available.  Hence, the popularity of the high efficiency heat pumps, oil heat and Propane (natural gas with on-site storage).

Home buyers' stated preference is usually

Gas Heat -So many folks don't believe that a home is being "heated" unless they feel really warm air coming from the heating ducts/grates.  If they are in urban areas, it will be municipal supplied natural gas.  If they are in a rural area, the choice will be Propane.

Heat Pump.  The high efficiency heat pump is popular in smaller homes, town homes and condos.  It has gained in popularity with engineering improvements in the past 20 years or so and with the fluctuating cost of natural gas.

Electric Heat - Not very popular because the electric furnace simply heats air and blows it out.  Expensive.

Fireplace.  In most homes, the fireplace will be a secondary source of heat.

                     Lenn's Fireplace

The beauty of the fireplace with the decorative exterior and hearth is possible with a masonry or pre-fab.

WHAT ABOUT THE FIREPLACE?  Is it going to be a masonry fireplace with a full masonry chimney?  Or, will it be a pre-fabricated fireplace "insert" that burns wood.  Or, so popular in recent years for homes with gas heat, the gas fueled fireplace that is an excellent heat source for the level and offers "ambiance" of a wood burning fireplace.

The gas fireplace is easy to use, provides heat, ambiance and easy to operate with the flip of a switch.

The wood burning fireplace will require a supply of fuel, wood.  You may find that the purchase, storage and use of a wood burning fireplace is work intensive, but nothing beats the ambiance.

Firewood  Fire Box

Sooner or later, that pile of firewood will need to go into the Firewood box.  Just keep it dry.

Lenn,

The majority of homes around here have gas fireplaces now....you still come across the odd wood-burning fireplace, and that would be my preference, however it seems the work and mess of heating with wood plus getting and storing firewood is too much for most people living in cities in my area.

Lenn,

Read with interest. Of course, here we are more concerned with cooling, but this winter could have changed it. Still, compare with your temperatures, electric is widely used here, but because of little usage it does not really affect the wallet.

JoAnne.  No doubt about it for urban dwellers.  However, the wood burning fireplace will often be an option in the country.

There are, however, many builders, especially in the lower price ranges that only offer the gas.

All I know is I am happy to complain when our weather gets into the 50's.

I have been in your climate and can't imagine ever doing it again.

By the way we have a fireplace - I flip a switch and the gas lights up and heats up the room.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lenn, I am not a big fan of fireplaces.  Although HVAC is a necessity.  I have found that geo-thermal heat pump systems are a very good choice.

As you are likely aware, the geo-thermal heat pump utilizes pipes buried beneath the earth where the temperature averages around 50 degrees F.  Thus the heat pump is able to efficiently use the water for heating, cooling and domestic hot water.

John.  I love my wood burning fireplace.  Now if I could just get that wood in the fire box.

Glen.  We have a very small number of geo-thermal systems in use around here.  I do know one builder here who offers it as an option, but it's costly.  There are also a number of rural log homes and contemporary style homes with these systems.  They don't help sell a home in this area.

Hi, Lenn. I lived in Maine for 15 years and Vermont for 10 and had a variety of woodstoves during that time. My favorite was a red enamel Vermont Castings but, when the opportunity presented itself, I swapped it for the exact same model in propane. No more chimney fire worries, no more creosote build up on the glass doors, no more annual chimney cleaning, no more dribbling sawdust through the house, no more emptying the ash bucket etc.

So many of the cabins that I show have ventless gas-log fireplaces  of some sort which, in my opinion, provides a good secondary source of heat as well as all the ambiance of a fireplace. Wood-burning fireplaces appeal to purists and romantics...LOL!

Lenn- It got so cold down here, in the 30's- the coldest it has ever been- and we were all bundled up with whatever we could find. It is tough when you are used to living in shorts. We did not want to turn the heater on because we have electric a/c units that have the heaters, which of course, are seldom if ever used. We had a new Trane systems ( 2 a/c units in our house) put in in 2005. This year we had to turn the heat on for a couple of days. Lo and behold, the heater did not work! Luckily it is under warranty and we had to replace the mother board. I don't think they even check the heaters on these a/c units when they install them. LOL

Katerina.  I have a heat pump which is quite efficient, but I don't heat the entire house all the time.  I haven't lost my mind.

Since I live in the country, I rarely use the A/C in the summer.  Opening the windows is more comfortable for me.
