CHILDREN ARE DYING IN HAITI - PLEASE HELP BRING THEM HOME!

The earthquake that hit Haiti 6 days ago left behind it a path of destruction. According to official estimates, there are 330,000 Orphans in Haiti right now. Some of these kids are in the process of being adopted by parents from the United States and other countries.

Many of these orphanages are in dire need of food and water. Some of these babies are dying from dehydration as I’m writing these lines. The situation is desperate. These kids are dying while their adoptive parents are doing all they can to rescue them.

After several days of pleas, the US has finally granted Humanitarian Parole to some of these kids, but to my knowledge, only seven of them have made it out of Haiti so far. Soledad O’Brien has been sending out distress Tweets all day today. She is at orphanages with babies who are dying, many of whom are in the process of being adopted by American parents, but so far the airlift seems like a fantasy.

We need to get these kids out as soon as possible. We also need to get the rest of the orphans out before they perish. Please help!

With tears in my eyes, but hope in my heart, I humbly ask for your assistance. Please spread the word and contact your US Representatives about this crisis! Every hour counts…

Carol: Thank you! I have been immersed in this Haiti crisis for the past 6 days. It is heart wrenching. It makes me sick. I can't eat. In the past six days I have seen things that are inconceivable.

I have assembled a list of Twitter users (over 150) who are on the ground in Haiti and we have disseminated and exchanged information since the quake. The situation is dismal. It is quickly becoming the worst rescue mission in modern history. Journalists sent to report end up doing volunteer work. I have seen thick skinned war correspondents breaking down. The suffering is beyond belief.

I will post another blog about it soon. For the time being and for the past several days, my main thrust has been to help these orphans. It is not an exaggeration to say that they are dying unless someone steps in and helps them.

Denise: Money is fine, but what we need right now more than anything else is activism. Post info regarding this on your social media, contact your representatives, the media, etc. There has been an amazing outpour of financial support, but the horrible coordination on the ground has kept most of it from reaching the people. That's where we need to direct our attention.

I heard an agent say today "Why is it our job to help these people all the time? Why doesn't someone else do it?" Since I returned to the US from 12 years overseas I have been depressed over what many of us have become. After hearing some comments by radio commentators I was even more put off. Those who have been blessed have an obligation to help those who are less blessed through no fault of their own. Bill Gates, in my opinion, has a duty to give more help to others than Joe Schmoe who just gets by. And the fact is, he and his wife live up to their resposibilities. They give away millions. We have become a very smug country that in many ways is now more selfish (as a nation) than ever in the past. I find that sad. "Help your neighbor "has turned into "Screw your neighbor" in just one generation. How very very sad. We no longer have the moral high ground in the world. My guess is that within 20 years we will no longer be a major player in the world and perhaps that is as it should be. We sure are mucking things up with our superior attitudes.

Mirela.. I love to help children, and it tears my heart out on these orphans in Haiti.. I've been to Haiti in better times (if there were any), and they desperate times back then.

I know as American's we want to help were we can. At this point our country is flood with illegal imigrants, and the unemployment is high. I think help should start at home first.

Mirela.. To continue.. Let's send them help, money, food and ways to rebuild.... whatever it takes. But to bring more people into this country I (personally) think needs to be put on hold.

thank you for the blog, a realtor I talked with today in Chilliwack is planning to go and and organizaiton on of my clients works for sent people and money last week. We can all do something even if give supplies, and resources to those that are going.

Clark: We need nurses very badly. Otherwise, Cash donations to reputable organizations already on the ground before the quake. I have a link to the right of this blog for donations to Doctors Without Borders, one of my favorite organizations. They have done so much good already and they are working non stop. Not only that, but they have been a wonderful source of information about what's actually going on there.

Mirela, This just breaks my heart. As a mother of 2 adopted children (from right here on our own soil), I can't imagine what these children are going through. They have been through enough with the loss of their birth families and then to have to suffer this tragedy. We ALL need to fight to get them out. They deserve a chance at life but moreover, a chance at love.

Valerie stated we have more than our share of illegal immigrants. I agree. Boot their asses out if they didn't follow the law for the shot at the "American Dream". I personally think that has NOTHING to do with these innocent children. These kids have lost their families. Many, thankfully, are too young to realize it. Many, unfortunately, are not. These children will need lots of love and understanding. Why NOT bring them here if a family has the love to share. I can't believe someone would want to deprive them of love that every human being deserves. They aren't charity cases. They have families that love them and want them. Why is that a problem?????

The whole international adoption process needs to be overhauled and this would be an excellent time to start. I have two children adopted internationally. We had two children who languished in a Guatemalan orphanage for over 9 months because the INS couldn't get the paperwork done in a timely manner. I hope and pray that this is the beginning of improving the process for all adoptive parents all over the country. What is so annoying is that the illegals are welcome while those that are following the laws and US citizens are punished.

Mirela, thank you for posting this. The children who have waited for a year and more to be adopted from Haiti have already been in limbo during the long adoption process. To refuse them entry just because paperwork in Haiti has been buried is insane and inhuman. The parents who have spent their precious time to adopt these kids have copies of all the paperwork necessary to clean up the details after the fact -- let the children get to their forever families now and deal with paperwork later! They aren't going anywhere... it's not like they are illegal immigrants who want to vanish into the U.S. system. I'm with Kim, too -- the international adoption system is a total mess. Maybe this will be a chance for at least one country to clean it up through dealing with the crisis.

I am also a big supporter of Doctors Without Borders and money donated to them right now goes to their Emergency Relief Fund which includes everything they were already doing in Haiti and from this point forward. That said, the Clinton-Bush fund was created to make sure money goes directly to Haiti relief so people know when they donate the money is being used well.

Valerie: It is very difficult for me to wrap my head around what you are saying right now. As a mother, my natural instincts are to just jump in and pluck that child out of harm's way. Economics, politics, religion, race... none of these things come to mind. It's just an urgent need to protect the child. Period!

It's meant for people who already have adoptions in process, but keep going back to it every few hours; it's ever changing...

Wow... I keep thinking about the island that disappeared off of our shores back in the day. The waves took it completely out. I found out about it while showing homes in Far Rockaway... The entire NYC area is seated on a fault line. My heart hurts for Haiti and every nation that has had to suffer through this. I hope we can reach people who can really step in and help.

C: Charleston is also on a main fault line. Several states are on it. We are all vulnerable. Fortunately for us we have seismic bracing in most structures. No matter how much we re-enforce, I still think that karma is the best protector... :)

Mirela, thank you for the updates. We are all doing what we can to help the people in Haiti. Doctors Without Borders has been there since the beginning but I understand that they are in desperate need of supplies, food and water. Send them money so their people can get what they need.

We need to ask some hard questions. While the US has control of the only point of entry for vital supplies into Haiti - the airport, they have turned away much needed medical supplies and personnel, while celebrities and their entourage and security are tying up the airport. This just can't continue!

What an amazing story of survival! At 8:11pm today, Jeanette is extricated from the rubble.

"Even if I die, I love you so much! Don't every forget it!" she screams out to her husband from the rubble. After several hours, she is rescued. It's a remarkable story of survival. She is in remarkably good spirits. What a survivor!

Yes I lived in Charleston, SC for about 10 years off and on Charleston is on a fault line. If you go downtown you can see in the old buildings the plates on the sides of the buildings that are bolted to the earthquake rods that run the length of the buildings and help the buildings absorb the shocks. That was the technology over 100 years ago.

While it's great that some people are caring I think these children should be able to stay in their country which is their home... their mother land. To rip a child from everything and everyone they have ever known especially for non-Americans can be traumatic so I hope that people donate to the American Red Cross instead.

That is also ripping out the next generation of Haitians against their will as they are not having a say in where they want to be. They did that to Native American babies on our soil and by displacing them from their mother land they are displacing them from their mother tongue. It's understandable and commendable that some people want to help but adopting a child from another country such as Haiti may traumatize these children for life and/or contribute to the genocide of its people starting with their children.

If they had a say then yes but these children do not have a say and will be raised in another country... away from their roots and everything and everyone who are connected to them. I hope that some people realize what damage can be done to the child by doing so and donate to the American Red Cross instead:

Hi Mirela - Thanks for posting this. It is gut wrenching to watch all this horror and destruction from afar. Those here that know me know that I am from Jamaica. My parents actually felt this quake so I am acutely aware that this could very easily have been my family and friends. I am sickened by people who respond with hatred at a time like this. At this point, love of other people should trascend racism and politics. I disagree with Lana (#46), while I think the Red Cross is a wonderful organization and deserves support, I do think for many of these children adoption is a way to a future. I think in normal circumstances when she says may be true but in this extreme situation it is impossible to expect children to survive with not one there to support them. There were many adoptions already underway before the earthquake hit and those especially should be expedited because the adoptive parents and he children have already begun to bond. I do think there are ways to leave your home and still remain connected and commited to it's survival.

Mirela, I hope they can do something immediately for these children and somehow make it a priority to get them home. I know the waiting for an adopted child while you go through all the red tape and it's agonizing. This has to be even more so. My children were both adopted from Colombia. I hope they get these children home and will do what I can.

Mirela, I too was watching and praying for Jeannette as her rescue unfolded, she exemplifies faith. I'm looking into learning more about Operation Pierre Pan. Hopefully they will be able to surmount the red tape to help these little ones... it breaks all our hearts when disaster strikes ~ but hurts deeper when the precious innocent little ones are involved...

Incredible Doctors Without Borders Update

Very sad news: a 5th plane filled with medical staff and supplies was NOT allowed to land in Port au Prince just a short while ago. In total, 85 tons of medical supplies have been kept from landing in #Haiti, while amputations are occurring without anesthesia, hard liquor is used to sterilize & gangrene is setting in & killing many. Any ideas of what we can do to make the US allow this humanitarian aid in? Star politicians are getting in, why can't medical aid be allowed entrance? Doctors without Borders are experiencing hardship like never before. Does anyone have any ideas of what can be done?

They also offer sponsorship programs for those who want to help an orphan directly: http://www.loveachild.com/sponsorship/

To sponsor a child it's $24 per month. They help to feed over 5,000 Haitian children per day and sponsored children receive basic medical care.

91.6% of their fundraising goes to program services, 3.8% goes to fundraising, and 1.6% goes to administration costs.

WONDERFUL NEWS TONIGHT: The family in the third video - The Howertons will be reunited with their son Kembert TONIGHT!!! Isn't that amazing? It's so wonderful to see so many happy reunions! Thank you to all of you who participated in the letter writing campaigns, the re-blogs, etc.!!!

There is still a lot more work ahead, but I am finally starting to see some results from all the hard work of so very many people, who did not give up the DREAM...

Hope is a wonderful thing. Without it we have nothing...

I have heard about the need for food, & the adoption efforts, It is wonderful to see the outpouring of support & aid for these unfortunate children. But I often wonder where are the methods of prevention? Why aren't there any programs to prevent all these unecessary pregnancys? Birth control may not be practical in most poverty stricken regions, but why not offer these women sterilization? Isn't that better than having to sell your child?
