A sharp drop in traffic along Old Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows since two new bridges opened negates the need for a new east-west connector, says a farmer who lives along the stretch.
The City of Pitt Meadows' application to take land out of the reserve for the North Lougheed Connector remains before the agricultural lands commission, awaiting approval.
The city of Pitt meadows maintains the connector is being proposed as a way to take traffic of Old Dewdney Trunk Road
Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean points to the North Lougheed Connector as an example of Pitt Meadows support for agriculture.
"The primary purpose of the road is to take traffic off Old Dewdney and releive traffic coming in and out of maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and you don't have to go too far to find a farmer who has a problem with the traffic," he said.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean also believes the drop in traffic on Old Dewdney Trunk is only temporary.
He said it will return as Maple Ridge grows from 75,000 residents to 125,000.
"[The traffic] may seem like it's going down a bit, but it's going to be increasing," MacLean added.
The provincial Agricultural Lands Commission are aware that traffic on Old Dewney Trunk has reduced
