Realtors®: We Are Practicing Real Estate Service

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Professionals BK659643

Do you think that being a Realtor® makes you an expert about Real Estate?  That's a heavy question.  I think that Realtors® need to start looking at their career in real estate just like Doctors and Lawyers look at their profession.

DoctorsWhat happens if a person wants to be a doctor?  They go to school for MANY years.  They have to pass massive exams.  They get a license in a state of their choice.  Their medical field is ever changing with science, new drugs, new illnesses, new cures, etc.  They continue their education throughout their careers. Therefore they are PRACTICING MEDICINE.  Yes, some can specialize in different realms of medicine.  Like a cancer specialist, or a urologist.  That becomes their specialty. It's rare to see a doctor telling the public that they are an expert.  A doctor has to keep up with new ways to treat and care for their patients. They have to learn how to use new tools & technology provide excellent service to their patients.

Doctors practice Medicine.

LawyerSame holds true for people who want to become an attorney.  They go to school for MANY years.  They have to pass massive exams.  They get a license in a state of their choice.  Each state has it's laws, local laws, federal laws. Laws do change.  That means their industry is evolving too.  They may even choose their specialty.  Criminal Law, International Law, Family Law, Corporate Law.  As attorneys, they must educate and learn throughout their careers.  New laws, new case history, it's important for an attorney to keep up with changes to serve his clients.

Lawyers Practice Law.

Today's Realtors® need to think the same way.  Our profession is to serve buyers and sellers in the Real Estate Market.  Our market is always changing.  There are cycles.  Buyers market or sellers market.  There are aspects of other things that effect any real estate market.  Bank Regulations, The Federal Reserve, Interest Rates, Fannie & Freddie, REO's, Short Sales....  All of those things effect our profession.  Yes, we can have specialties - buyer agent, listing agent, REO Specialist - but all of this is evolving....daily.  We have to continue to learn and master new tools in marketing, client service, and business operations.

RealtorsIf a person wants to be a real estate agent.  They go take a course- not years and years of education. They pass an exam.  They get a state license. If they are a Realtor®, we have a Code of Ethics.  But this does NOT make us experts.  Yes, we are the professionals, but no one should lay claim to being "the expert".  The rules of Real Estate change, the market changes....we have to keep up with what is current to stay on top of the game.

Yes, we can earn specialties and designations - this requires education and learning.   We use these tools to serve our clients. Technologies, computers, Internet, all effect HOW we do our business. We must adapt and learn.

The real estate market is what it is.  It goes UP. It goes down.  It's always a cycle.  We have to be knowledgeable about what is effecting our real estate market. That means we must learn, and grow to serve our clients. (Just like Doctors and Lawyers).

Realtors Practice Real Estate Service!!

We have to master our craft....what do you think?

Christine ~ I am continually educating myself to better serve my clients.  Each day is a new begining and I challenge myself to learn something new everyday.  I do believe there are too many agents full and part time out there that just past the test but know nothing about everything it takes to be a Professional Realtor.   The dedication, motivation, education beyond the letters after.  Great topic.

It's not only in the service, its the service after the sale that counts too!

Hi Christine...That's exactly what makes real estate so interesting for me even after all these years.  There's always more to learn.

Thanks C Tann-Starr for sending me this way.  I agree with Karen and C.  To be of good value and service to our clients, we have to constantly be on top of the everchanging RE environment - always improving by learning and experience.

Christine, so very well written. I agree with Margaret. Practicing isn't exactly what anyone needs. I would really like it to be more difficult for people to get licenses. There are too many running around causing chaos for the rest of us because they don't know what they're doing!

Well thanks to everyone that has made comments here!!!  I'll try to respond to them all.

Clint: I feel the same way too about the expert/guru terms.

Tracy - I like that service and smile!  Thanks for reading my post.

Russell - thanks for your kind words.

Robert - You're so right...it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole basket. Thank you!

Jason - same here!  It's 11 years for me, and there is always something new.  I am working a transaction now with a "RADON" issue.  First time for me, so I spent an hour "reading" the epa.gov/radon web site today.

Kris - I am glad it helped reinforce how you feel too.  I see "bad answers" on Trulia Voices.  I never answer questions on there in a different area, but I have seen exactly what you are talking about too.

Don - thanks for reading and commenting.

Jackie - So true !!  It aint about the money.  If we got paid by the hour, we'd me gazillionaires wouldn't we!  I like your description of ebb and flow too.  Thanks for reading and commenting here!

Christianne - I remember that article/NAR about used car saleman too.  I am happy that the membership to our local, state, and national association has declined.  It's not a FAD - it's our career and business.  I think some have figured out that it ain't easy or quick bucks for just a license. Or at least not is a slow market.

Tammy - You're right...it's not that we sell houses - we provide a service!  And if we're good at what we do, we can be their service provider for life!

Margaret - Sorry I missed your call. I was at a home inspection.  I understand that you don't like the thought of a doctor practicing "ON" you, but they consider their business career and their client base "their practice".  I wish that term could be used by our profession.  I am not the broker-owner of the REMAX Franchise my license is with - but I feel like it's my business.  So rather than it being a brokerage firm, each Realtor could have their own Real Estate Practice.  I appreciate you reading my post and thank you leaving your comment.  I agree with your slogan: Education, Expertise and Experience!

Gary - You and I think alike, thanks for your taking a moment to read and comment here :)

Wanda - I am very glad that "C" spread the word about this post too.  Thanks for stopping in too!

Lori - thank you!  It's great to get 2 thumbs up from the Chaos Group!

Mark - Wow, thanks for your awesome comment!  I hadn't thought of that, and it's a great description.

Susan - I agree!  I tease a fellow agent that there is an ABR on her business cards....and she hates working with buyers.  That's a hoot!

Petra - thank you for your nice compliment!

June - you and I think the same too.  Our service lays the foundation for more clients-from referrals of the ones we have served during and after the transaction.

Christine - nice and well written post however I must respectfully disagree on the point of calling oneself an expert.  I am an EXPERT.  After being in this business since 1985 and helping THOUSANDS of families buy and sell real estate I think I qualify.  Yes, I continue my education. ( and the school of hard knocks is probably the best in this market!).  No, I don't know everything.  Doctors and Lawyers don't either.  We learn by doing, helping, further education, etc...

Checking Wikipedia for the definition of expert... it  is: An expert  is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public in a specific well-distinguished domain. An expert, more generally, is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular area of study.    An expert can be, by virtue of credential, training, education, profession, publication or experience, believed to have special knowledge of a subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially (and legally) rely upon the individual's opinion.

April - by all means, you can disagree.  Thanks for your adding your comment.  We all have different personalities and egos.  I just tend to be more humble ( I am my worst critic) .  I've never been one to brag about my $$$ volume or top producer credentials.  I am proud of my experience and service with clients and I'm confident that can do a great job. I will admit it does bother me when I see a recently licensed agent, plastering their face on a billboard and announcing they are the leading GURU of this or that. There have been agents like that 4 years ago, that are nowhere to be found now. Survival and the school of hard knocks are the badge of honor in this market.

Hmm. Good points. But I am somewhat conflicted. Too many agents call themselves professionals and they're NOT! As for experts, you can't be an expert of everything little nuance of real estate, but you can be an expert in certain things. And continuing education for certain areas of expertise, OR if it's a specific neighborhood, just knowing what's available, what has sold, what current problems or HOA issues may be, etc., could qualify as an expert in that neighborhood. Just my thoughts.

Christine, the comments and the post are most interesting. I hesitate to call myself an expert because there is always something I don't know; the good news is that I know when and where to research to get the real answers. The most dangerous providers, in any profession, are those who do not recognize that they don't know something or are too proud or stubborn to ask a question.

The level of training required for licensure reflects the level of respect to which real estate licensees are held by the legislature in the states and the NAR.

Christine - good post and a little provoking...which is good because it make us think and reftlect...thanks.

I totally agree with Lenn, she is right on the money! This kind of perception is not only held by the above (state legislature and NAR) but also by the majority of the public.

With smiles,

Christine,

It is interesting, and thought provoking...

But I am lost on semantics here.

Doctors practice medicine, lawyers practice law. If you keep this line, then real estate agents (and not Realtors) practice Real Estate.

Why Realtors, and why Real Estate Service. I think semantically that's wrong. How do you practice service, except in Restaurant?

And if you take Realtors, this line would be that Realtors are practicing COE, because that where the difference between Realtors and Agents is. Agents practice Real Estate. Agents, who are Realtors, adhere to COE. While both practice Real Estate, the group of Agents is a Real Estate Professional Group, and Realtors are part of it.

Just my 2 cents

I think you are completely on point is what I think. I started in this business 4 months ago and have been studying like a mad man. I think I've driven my dad (Broker Bryant) absolutely bonkers with all of my questions. I've always had a thirst for knowledge and it's no different here. The more I study the smaller the learning curve has become.
