Marketing, as I've said in several past blogs, is the first step in developing a successful real estate business.  If the phone does not ring, there will be very little or no business.  How fortunate we are today to have a networking real estate site as we do with Activerain.  It's a small investment with a large return, if worked consistently and properly.

Years ago, we relied on print advertisingI can't speak for you, but I know it dug deeply into my pockets!!  I have eliminated all print ads, and the only type of printing I purchase is postcards for direct mail advertising.  Direct mail is also expensive, but it works.  Sometimes the more expensive forms of advertising work best during tough times because not many agents want to spend the money.  That's a reason for me to increase the size of my direct mail advertising.

Eventually, the majority of real estate agents in the world will catch on to blogging.   As the participation to AR increases, and members are encouraged through point accumulation to invite additional members, our blogging skills need to improve and the quality of our content is critical.  Competition does that, even with blogging.  The more one blogs, the more comfortable one will be with the task.  It's easy to write when you have knowledge about a topic.  What will happen if you have no mastery of the real estate business?  In the future, maybe the undertaking of blogging will be responsible for helping to improve the quality of the participants within our industry.

Interesting observations.  I was thinking this morning about how fast AR is growing.  And, with the professionals blogging, some more than once a day, if you can't find good information here, you can't find it anywhere.

Don....AR is growing very fast.....the competition within AR is also growing fast.....blogging is more than a one or two liner....sooner than we realize, blogging will be THE source of real estate education.

Hi Barbara, Very good points.  I also have been in the business a long time and like everything else it has been changing leaps and bounds.  I love the changes and can not wait to learn the next thing.  My hope (goal) for this year is to get some good systems down to spend less time do somethings and more time doing others.  More of the items that show a return to my bottom line.  It's such a delicate balance.

Kimberly.....every marketplace is different.....one needs to test a variety of marketing functions to determine what will work best for your marketplace and the type of homeowner within that area....unless you try it, you'll never know...we know blogging works for most.

Barbara, we have 26 agents in our office and I know of only one other than myself who is set up with only a profile. At our next meeting I am going to invite everyone in our office to check out Active Rain. Thanks for the idea.

Barbara--more good points.  Yes, I have seen AR grow in my short time here.  Some of the newer members have rocketed to the top very quickly because they understand technology, blogging and SEO, etc.  I will be back, but first I need to teach a few classes today.

Barbara, I like this "In the future, maybe the undertaking of blogging will be responsible for helping to improve the quality of the participants within our industry."

I know that I, for one have been helped immensely just by lurking and blogging! And yes, we all need to stay on top of this because the competition will only get tougher. Great writers are amoungst us (not necessarily great Realtors) and we have to compete with them.
