Winston Churchill made this statement at the age 66 while making his first speech to House of Commons after his appointment as Prime Minister. At the age of 66 Churchill was thrown into a role that would change his life, as well as the history of the world. Churchill was truly a man for his time, as he often said to his wife,” I was born for this”.

It would take nerves of steel to make your first speech as Prime Minister knowing that Great Britain would probably be standing alone in a battle that would determine it’s very existence.

As if that isn’t enough what many people don’t know about Sir Winston Churchill was that he suffered from a lisp as well a stammer. Imagine what courage it took to address his nations Parliament and people knowing that many of the words chosen are going to make your oratory shortcomings known to all.

Churchill spent many hours visiting a speech therapist, and practicing speaking for hours to overcome his impediment. His speeches were crafted in such a way that words and phrases that exaggerated his lisp and stammer were avoided.

So what does this information do for me? People such as Churchill and the brave men who fought here at Gettysburg, where I work and live are truly heroes. Men of iron character, people to be admired. What we are facing today in these difficult times pales in comparison to what these men and women faced. When you really stop and think about it, we are lucky, lucky that the brave men and women before us acted as they did to keep this world from falling into total chaos. Our “troubles” pale in comparison.
